You can download current navigational data from Navigraph.com in FSX. This contains updated navaid frequencies and approach chart info. Using that in conjunction with high fidelity simulation software such as what PMDG offers will give you a taste of real world flight.

VATSim is a group of ATC afficionados that virtually control the skies. Flying with a headset and interacting with those folks will save a pilot a lot of money when training for an instrument rating.

The new FS looks fantastic. I’m a fan of software like this that inspires people to pursue aviation. Can’t wait until it comes out!

That’s one of the tools we used on 4Chan years ago when we found that idiot Shia Labeouf’s stupid flag..
