Mark Hamill was awfully lucky to be cast in the 1970s as Luke Skywalker. He never really had great acting talent. He was not well-liked nor was he disliked. Why he was chosen is really about youthful boyish looks and low budget bookings, as well as his blond hair, and a tenor voice that could read lines with the right inflection. But there were many others that could do the same but the film industry was in the crap house and there weren't many choices on the meager budget for the first Starwars episode.
Lucas was not established when he did his first Starwars film. He was barely funded, and most of the scene in Hollywood studio lots was of chain link fences closing off access as the industry was taking a dive.
Lucas and Spielberg went to film school together at USC and they were regarded as long haired oddballs with sci-fi ideas. Studio executives looked at them as B-rated film producers begging for anything they could get their hands on.
So Lucas's casting director chose Hamill and Hamill was made famous because the Starwars brand came just at the right time with the reruns of the late 1960s cancelled Startrek TV series brought back with never seen before popularity. After the amazing Moon landings, the country was ripe for escape with sagas of exploring the universe.
Lucas and Hamill just happened to be in right genre at the right time.
Since his success with Starwars, Hamill has fallen flat because as he aged he had no real acting talent to fall back on and his name would only be considered for roles based on nostalgia, not on marketability, not on being the right fit.
So he drifted and has evolved into a first class Hollywood punk.
Kids across the country still are swept up with the original Starwars magic and its stories. The sci-fi fairytale has universal staying power like the 1934 Wizard of Oz. The original Starwars trilogy will always be popular with kids and young people until augmented reality producers recapture it with the latest and greatest technology.
So it's not surprising to see a child don a stormtrooper costume and stomp around proclaiming "The Force be with you!".
But when it's Ivanka Trump's 3-year old on display in the Twitterverse enjoying the fantasy of Starwars, it draws out today's bile of frustrated Hollywood wannabes and has-beens as an opportunity to flush out the constipated brown matter taking up space between their ears.
So, humblegunner, you’re against vanities too now?
This particular vanity thread has 56 replies as of my typing this. That’s a pretty good number for ANY FR thread.
Why don’t you just take a pill or something? Or are you out of your meds?
Don’t you have a life? Maybe you would better spend your time trying to get one.
Just sayin’.
Lucas was also known for “THX-1138” as well, IIRC. Any thoughts on that title here, as I’ve never gotten around to see it even though I might like to sometime.
In addition to being only nominally capable in the Luke Skywalker role, he had a serious accident after becoming a star, marring those boyish good looks at a still young age: His only real advantage was thus gone.
Mark Hamill only did any serious acting in one role: doing voice-over as The Joker in the WB cartoons. I was pleasantly surprised by how effective he was.
The best thing to do is ignore him.
Precisely. Thank you.
Nobody asked you for your trite mini-screed.
1. What you call a self-promoter may or may not be one; your mere accusation certainly has no credibility.
2. Such do not “need” to be discouraged. You may feel a compulsive, obsessive need to discourage them, but that is your problem.
Instead of leaving a thread to those of us who want to address the actual topic, you high-jack the thread to promote yourself with off-topic, and often vulgar, sometimes genuinely obscene, trollery.
This was in “General/Chat”; it was not listed as news, as far as I can tell - which, if so, would make you also a liar.
I moved it to chat.
Never said he had no talent, he did not have enough to impress people. Other actors have had terrible accidents such as Patricia Neal and gone on to roles that were memorable.
Hamill’s face was reconstructed but his maturity as an actor did not follow.
I remember people saying Hamill was Ok in the role of Skywalker but there were many others that could have played that role perhaps with more impressive impact. Hamill was not bad but whatever acting talent he had was not enough to carry him through to other roles to leave a name in the entertainment industry.
Some actors get better with age and experience. Bogart seemed better with each film.
I was never in the industry but had close friends who were, one of them fairly prominent. The acting path is inherently unstable even when a person is lucky enough like Hamill to hitch a ride with a big success. The fame takes an actor up into the clouds and if they can’t stay there, they crash hard. Many actors have lived such a high life that when they lose cashflow, they suffer foreclosures, bankruptcies but still their heads are in the clouds of fame even though they are no longer there. It can be really sad and they often succumb to drugs, alcohol, and worse.
When I was younger, I could never imagine a Hollywood celebrity leaving such a terrible impression on a 3-year old who adored the films the celebrity was in. Can’t think of one from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, even 90s. Can’t think of even one. There have been disasters of people in that industry but there was always a public face they showed that was civil and kind to children.
It’s obvious Hamill is a disturbed individual with issues that go beyond politics. He should see a mental health care provider if he’s not already seeing one.
Thanks for the move. I put it in politics/news because it was an incident of hatred towards Trump, his family and their little 3-year old.
It was one of those postings that is difficult to categorize. But now I see ‘general chat’ is a better home. Thanks again.
>>Someday Ill have to try to sit through it. Maybe<<
Proof Hamill could not act. I actually thought the idea of a one seat left-hand drive ‘vette was unique.
Your right humblegunner,nobody cares.
Huh?...
In the cartoon series. Actually the cartoon series was better than some of the live action movies. I never paid that close attention to the credits, and didn’t realize Hamill was The Joker.
Gotcha. I thought the poster was trippin’.
#69 what do you mean disturbed individual?
Mark is as sane as the next homeless guy.
He just has more money....
Star Wars star Mark Hamill searches through a public ashtray for used cigarette butts... which he smokes in his luxury BMW

No sweat - it’s a judgement call...if it had been a one/two line rant - I would’ve probably pulled. Looks like you put some effort into it, so I just chatted.
