David Lee Roth says that VAN HALEN is "finished."
The singer made the comment while speaking to Meltdown of the Detroit radio station WRIF about his upcoming Las Vegas residency, which is due to kick off in January.
Asked if he was "bummed out" that he couldn't tour with VAN HALEN this past summer, as had been rumored several months ago, Roth responded: "That's been canceled a number of times, and I think VAN HALEN's finished and this is the next phase. I've inherited the band de facto whatever that means. I think it means if you inherit it, carry this proudly. VAN HALEN isn't gonna be coming back in the fashion that you know. And that being said, Eddie's [Van Halen] got his own story to tell. [It's] not mine to tell it."
Roth's latest comments echo those he made earlier in the month when he told the Phoenix radio station KSLX that he was "the face of VAN HALEN from this point on, most likely. I'm not sure what's happening with Ed, but he's probably not gonna answer the bell this time," he said. "And it's not my place to guess."
Asked if he was implying that Eddie Van Halen had been dealing with some health issues as of late, Roth replied: "I hear all the same rumors that you do and it's not my place to guess."

I am a fan and you’re right Eddie is most likely the best R&R lead guitarist of all time. Of course that is my opinion.
David Lee actually believed he was the band. He definitely learned the truth. Sammy Hagar as an artist ran circles around David, without working up a sweat.
Now you’re talkin’ Space Station #5 best
I guess that insurance policy about impregnating women (groupies) didn’t help. Just noise in my book, nothing more. Roth’s version of “Just a Gigolo” was very appropriate. Certainly won’t miss anything about them.
“Cranked marshall with a variac beats Peavey endorsement.”
I agree, but now Eddie has his own brand EVH via Fender,
However the 5150 Combo was a great amp, loud
It was Roth’s uncle who was in music industry that got Van Halen traction in the biz.
I rember reading the New York Post about 15 years ago. David Lee was working as EMT in Brooklynn NY.
No money,
No Van Halen.
Sammy all the way! Eddie wasted away so many potentially great years with SH.His ego got in the way . Loved VH with DLR, but Sammy is such a better singer and song writer.
That second video has a great clip of Paul Gilbert in it. He is an exceptional guitarist as well.
Ed was a mess even after the cancer. Boozing big time. Hagar said right after that 2004 tour they did, Ed was skin and bones and only had about five teeth left in his head. Apparently a mean drunk, too. That 2007 reunion tour with Roth ended up being cut short because Ed not only fell off the wagon again, he got run over by it a few times. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame award show that year was a real comedy of errors. Everybody expected to see classic and Hagar-era VH playing. Ed ends up in rehab again, Alex won’t pick up a drumstick unless his brother is around, Mike Anthony was fired after the 2004 tour (in which he had to sign away all rights to his VH legacy and get paid like a session musician) and was replaced by Ed’s son, the RRHOF basically relegated Roth to a glorified walk-on and he wasn’t allowed to swallow the mic and do his Diamond Dave schtick, so Roth bailed. The only two who did show up were Hagar and Anthony, and they weren’t even in the band anymore. LOL That band went from being the 80’s hottest cruise ship to a sunken barge in a polluted river.
You Most Definitely Are.
While Roth is an Ego Maniac, he is far more Entertaining AND Relevant to this band than the founders.
Certainly more so than Hagar.
From a pure stage performance perspective Roth was Van Halen.
The Derogatory phrase Van Hagar has a definite basis in reality. The original fan base never has and never will accept the guy as legit. A stone cold fact.
As they age and Eddies’s perceived importance fades into irrelevancy he has become bitter.
Eddie has toyed a few times with bringing the group back together but, Roth’s out-sized persona and Eddie’s resentment of that make this almost completely impossible
Too bad. Because with a few exceptions 99.9% of Van Halen fans consider the Original Group the ONLY actual Van Halen Group. .
Since Hagar tried to turn them into another Montrose, I was not fond of that period. Of course, that was the period of their greatest album sales, but it was not the same by far.
I thought Van Halen was finished thirty years ago.
LOL, I went to see them with Sammy Hagar, and he was climbing in the ceiling scaffolding that must have been 75-100 feet up in that arena, hanging by his hands...er...hand.
It was just sick. I couldn’t believe it. He just climbed up his stage setup all the way to the girders in the roof, and began swinging from them. That guy really is/was a wild man!
He toned it down such that the VH vs DLR in 1986 competiton wasn't close; Dave's band with Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, and Greg Bissonette was possibly better than Dave/Michael/Alex. The DLR live show was better than Van Hagar (though Sammy's guitar was a welcome added dimension).
I am perfectly fine if VH never toured again. Dave's voice is not what it was, and unless Michael Anthony's vox and bass is present, it's not VH. Sammy, however, remains the real deal...Rock Candy!!
I seem to recall it was back in the mid to late eighties sometime.
I had a good time in the Eighties...:)
My father was very impressed with Sammy Hagar. He jumped from about 15 foot ceiling landed in PLF on the floor. Dad said that’s a paratroop Landing formation. Most folks would have broke their ankles from the height he dropped from.
Gimme a bottle of anything, and a glazed donut...
To go!
I liked Sammy when he was with Montrose.
Rock Candy, baby.
