CVS is removing the popular Zantac heartburn treatment and its own generic ranitidine products from its pharmacies after traces of a carcinogen were found in the drugs.
It acted after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that some of the pills contained small amounts N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).
NDMA has been linked to colorectal, stomach, liver and kidney cancers in animal studies.
CVS claims the move was made out of an abundance of caution while the FDA continues to review the risks.
'Zantac brand products and CVS brand ranitidine products have not been recalled, and the FDA is not recommending that patients stop taking ranitidine at this time,' CVS said in a statement.
The CEO of AG's Sandoz unit - which makes Zantac - said last week it was halting distribution of the drug in all its markets, including the United States and Canada, following safety review of the drug by US and European drug regulators.
Zantac is among the most popular medications for heartburn, or acid reflux.
The discovery of NDMA in its active ingredient follows the earlier worrisome discovery of the same carcinogen in blood pressure management drugs like valosartan, irbesartan and similar drugs.

Oh crap I take that stuff
I should have put it in news because a lot of people here probably take it
This is what happens when we allow 80% of our medial drug ingredients to be made in China and India.
[[[Oh crap I take that stuff]]]
Since 1986 here when it first came out. It was a Godsend for me. This has China written all over it.
Walmart has some sort of generic version of something like that called Omeprazole. Unsure if Zantac has the same ingredients.
that is prilosec
Different I think. Zantac is ranitidine.
Omeprazole is the generic version of Prilosec. A different drug.
The generic of Zantac is ranitidine.
So... Prilosec now?
Then there’s the same issue in Losartan for hypertension, but:
“Patients who are taking Losartan Potassium Tablets, USP and Losartan Potassium/Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets, USP should continue taking their medication, as the risk of harm to the patients health may be higher if the treatment is stopped immediately without any alternative treatment.”
Different drug.
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibiter with its own set of issues.
Of course. But it's cheaper....
Just a repost: I found this https://www.drugs.com/answers/difference-between-zantac-omeprazole-gerd-647534.html
Those are the most lethal ten words that can be uttered in a free society, particularly by its government.
Made for Sandoz in China??
Only the LP made by Torrent has been recalled.
some of the pills contained small amounts N-nitrosodimethylamine
