he rank odor from the end of the hallway had become too strong to ignore.
For nearly two months, it was faint enough that nobody at the University of Canterbury realized that a young man was dead, and decomposing, in his own room. Students left campus for two weeks of vacation, and returned, and still no one noticed anything.
But on Monday, police finally made it to the Sonoda dorm at the suburban campus outside Christchurch, New Zealand, where authorities discovered the body of a first-year student, local media reported. The student's father, who could not reach the young man through his friends, had also contacted police.
The young man's body had gone untouched for so long that police had to call in a special team to examine fingerprints, DNA and dental records so they could confirm his identity, Detective Senior Sgt. Craig Johnson told reporters. Most details surrounding the incident, including the student's name and age, had not been made public as of early Wednesday, and the coroner is still investigating the cause of death.
Amid an outcry from university students that's gone all the way up to New Zealand's education minister this week, a university is grappling with a grim question: How could a dead student go undiscovered for so long?
For now, no one really seems to know.
"It is inconceivable to imagine how these circumstances could have occurred," Cheryl de la Rey, the university's vice chancellor, said in a statement to The Washington Post.
De la Rey said Wednesday that the university will commission an independent investigation to examine the oversight, despite what she called an "extensive" well-being program to support students.

I had a neighbor once whose job it was to retrieve dead bodies and clean up the coroners van after the delivery...............
In my day, back in the stone age, our dorm rooms were subject to weekly housekeeping inspections.
Must have been a private school..............................8^)
I can believe it. You see how women treat their cars? It’s almost schizo how they get emotionally attached to them and love them while beating the crap out of them. It’s a weird abusive relationship.
Wow, I find it so weird that somebody does that for a living. But somebody has to, it takes all kinds!
It is college so no one cares if you are in class.
He was a freshman and they dont usually have a big friend group at the beginning of the year.
If parents were divorced it would be normal that one did not hear from the kid and the assumtion is that the other parent is in contact.
Had an aquaintace whose kid was 20 and found hanging from a bridge, six months after the suicide. Neither had missed him, both assumed he was staying with the other.
Yeah, he used to bring the van home and wash it out in the driveway..................8^(
As a woman, I can tell you that, yes, there is graffiti in women’s restrooms.
The funniest I saw was written on the inside door of a toilet stall 40 years ago. It read: “Don’t bother standing. Our crabs jump 12 feet.”
“Mens dorms are usually stinky so one more odor was likely overlooked”
If he was a Socialist they’d have trouble delineating the sink of his corpse from his smell before here died.
That’s what I thought, too, it’s a form of acting out. Women are expected to look clean and perfect at all times. Women in their early 20s are usually brow-beaten by parents and fellow women to find a man. That’s a lot of pressure in itself, aside from the immense pressure to do well in school. Guys are expected to cut loose and be slobs, women are supposed to be these perfect little waifs all the time. No wonder some of them act out like this.
Oh wow!
Back in the mid-90s it was once a month.
You terming that bizarre abusive behavior ‘weird’ tells me that you have either:
A. Never been married or
B. You hit the lotto, found the unicorn, and a 4 leaf clover all rolled up into a wife...
A lot of behavior we guys look upon as bizarre is not ‘weird’ when evaluated within the female demographic..
I think it still depends on where you go to school.
At my community college and main university, it’s liberals. Doesn’t much matter what your major is. I did SEEM to have more conservative professors at the univ than CC (damn liberal physics guy still working here at CC), but the students - I could count on my hand how many engineering/science co-students were conservative.
This is all near my home which is confoundedly liberal. I’m native but surrounded by interlopers from DC.
This female was usually outnumbered in more ways than 1. Hated it. Still hate it working in college and living here.
Sons are very different from daughters, as well. Almost every mom of a grown son that I know speaks of not hearing from them for weeks at a time. Then again, the sons whom I reference are heterosexual.
Ha ha, you're from the days of "men's" and "women's" dorms.
Stinky? French.
Yeah, my vet sent a checkup reminder postcard a few months after euthanizing my dear pet.
