The World's Most Important Electric Car Is Launching Now, And It's Not A Porsche Or Tesla
The Drive ^ | 9 Sept 2019 | EDWARD NIEDERMEYER

And unlike the fabulously-engineered Porsche and the standard-carrying Teslas, this electric car has genuine world-changing potential.

...we concluded that the impressive little car was at least as disruptive as anything Tesla has done... At the time, we heard whispers that Renault's best cost engineers were turning their attention to an electric version of the Kwid and now that it's been announced it's clear that the breakthrough we were hoping for is actually real.

Well, they've done it. With 100 miles of reasonably real-world range for under $9,000, Renault has accomplished something that Tesla will likely never be able to achieve and taken what may well be the most important next step for EV adoption. While the affluent West quibbles about lap times for six-figure vehicles, this modest little Renault is making sure that the millions of first-time car buyers in developing markets around the world ...

"Renault's ability to develop the breakthrough Kwid came from the amazing cost-engineering prowess of Gerard Detourbet, who leveraged his experience at the low-cost Dacia brand into the car that took India by storm."

Detourbet might be the next Steinmetz! But for a Car name they may have to go with Steinmetz middle name.

How big is a skwid?

I just expect it to be very small.

you could end up as Skwid marks.

I live in smog valley — Phoenix Valley of the Sun.

I am in one corner of the valley.

This car won’t drive to my wife’s regular needlepoint shop 2/3rds of the way across the valley and back. It is over 100 miles avoiding Downtown I-10.

It looks a lot like the new Fiat that came out a few years ago.

The new Hyundai Kona has an all-electric version that looks about like this. It’s on sale now.

Renault was infamous for their car’s reliability last I knew.

Back in the 1980’s they had a similar splash in the press when the introduced their La Car in the US.

The La Car was short lived due to, you guessed it, reliability problems.

The biggest problem I see is it’s a Renault.

A used Nissan Leaf can be had for less.

Your wife should open her own needlepoint shop.

No competition nearby.

I think the Yugo was a better car.

If any company could make an electric car unreliable it would be Renault.

Electric cars have no souls, and are driven by people without souls.

You might as well get a lobotomy.

I think the Yugo was a better car.

That is about the lowest reliability bar to set!

That was actually “Le Car” (the article “le” being masculine gender; wonder if some would accuse Renault of “misgendering” now), and the phrase oddly translates as “the tour bus”.

Elsewhere, the car was known as the Renault 5 and the first generation was produced between 1972 and 1985; there was a second generation that ran from 1984 to 1996 that was never sold in the US.

$10,000 in China. By the time you meet U.S. standards, that’s probably at least $20,000. Still cheap. But will Americans prefer a tiny $20,000 car to a $30,000 real car?

Batteries are still the main impediment to electric cars and other forms of alternative energy. Like the internal combustion engine the state of the art has not really ramped up in 100 years.
