AN ASTEROID which came crashing into Earth and NASA had no idea it was coming reiterates the need to keep a closer eye on the sky in case a massive space rock comes hurtling towards our planet.
A small asteroid shot towards Earth at 14.9 kilometres per second, and NASA admitted it did not know it was coming. The space rock known as 2019 MO was just three metres wide and exploded when it hit the planets atmosphere on 22 July above the Caribbean, but the way it approached unexpectedly reaffirms the need for more eyes on the sky. NASA said: When first spotted, 2019 MO was about 310,000 miles (500,000 kilometers) from Earth - farther out than the orbit of our Moon.

So THAT’S how the oceans will rise - they’ll be filled with asteroids! Makes perfect sense.
Maybe they ignored it because early reports showed it hitting Alabama.
If it’s small enough to be ignored, ignore it.
It would suck if it hit a satellite on the way in though. Not much chance of that anyway.
Scare people only. Honestly, what if a massive asteroid was on it’s way? What could we do? Absolutely NOTHING.
NASA seems stupider as time goes by.
Here comes another big money grab from NASA
NASAs budget is about one half of one percent of the federal budget.
And has declined almost every year since 1991.
Ten feet in diameter is a bit large for a meteor and a bit small for an asteroid. Doesn’t it depend on whether it comes from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, from the Oort Cloud, or from somewhere else?
Does anyone know the size of the Russian meteor a few years ago that broke thousands of windows? Cheliabinsk? or something like that.
NASA’s primary mission is to recruit a diverse workforce.
They also are trying to pretend to send a mission to the moon with diverse folks on board.
The first mission will make the second mission impossible.
Thanks marron. He'd have demanded too much money for the role, anyway. ;^)
We could loudly scream leftist slogans and hope their Cargo Cult deity could save us!
We were too preoccupied to panic over nothing. For example, I was sorting out my mismatched sock drawer.
To geologists, the difference a rock and a boulder is arbitrary -- boulders start at 4 inches. Meteor just refers to natural debris that burns its way into Earth's gravity well. Asteroids are large chunks of debris. When as asteroid arrives in a terminal dive into the Earth's atmosphere, it is also a meteor. :^) Back to watching "The Expanse", a sci-fi potboiler series originally produced by Syfy channel, now produced by Amazon. Seasons 1 and 2 are on Prime. I haven't made up my mind if it does just suck. A friend of mine was over and we binge-watched the first nine episodes.
Lol!
They're using the Caribbean.
Unfortunately I cannot watch the programs you mentioned as I don’t have cable. My partner and I are both writing books and I am doing major renovation on a 4 story row house, so we decided NO CABLE FOR US. I especially am addicted to some programs, I am also cutting back on Samurai Sudoku.
Hide under your desk if you want a false sense of security - I'm with the "scoffers" who know that until we have technology to actually find and destroy them, watching the comets does nothing except keep some star-gazers in a job...if they had known about it, it would have done exactly what it did w/o their knowledge.
How do you feel about us Global Warming scoffers?
Just as accurate as their forecasts about climate change.
“but if it was a large one detected early enough, we might be able to steer it away or slow it so that it’s trajectory no longer intersected with Earths orbit.”
How?
“
I think its best classified as a meteorite. Check this out:”
Below is an excerpt from your link. Since it didn’t survive and land on the earth’s surface it was not a meteorite.
Meteorite: If a small asteroid or large meteoroid survives its fiery passage through the Earth’s atmosphere and lands on Earth’s surface, it is then called a meteorite.
