A blind man was forced to carry his disabled adult son on his shoulders in chin-deep water as Hurricane Dorian tore apart their home in the Bahamas.
Brent Lowe, 49, rushed to save his 24-year-old son who has cerebral palsy when the deadly hurricane bore down on their home in the Abaco Islands on Sunday with 220 mph winds.
Lowe, who has been blind for 11 years, told the New York Times that there were eight people sheltering in his cement home when the hurricane first made landfall.
They were huddling together in the bathroom when the storm tore the roof off his home.

When you’re building your house out of mostly scavenged material, how choosy can you be? Again, first world bias. I can tell you that if my house were destroyed by a hurricane or tornado I would probably rebuild pretty much just like it is, because that’s what I can afford. I could not afford to make it storm proof.
Severely disabled people should not be living in a potentially dangerous place, and, if they really want to, they should have a rescue plan.
The amusing part was President Trump beating the hell out of the media.
He’s fun. It seems he gives the media a squirrel to chase every day.
It had to be horrific.
Not sure why the reporter chose to say he was “forced” to carry his son. No one was forcing him to carry his son, he did that out of love, compassion, many other reasons but he was not forced to carry him.
This man was not forced, it was his choice to either die or take charge and save both of them. He is a hero, not a victim.

Every governor has been telling people to evacuate for days, why do people ignore sound advice? Especially with disabilities. Many cities have set up shelters and are waiting for refugees from Dorian to show up. We’d activated our ER teams to go to those states.
My Son in Law sent his family north to Nashville, he had to stay as he is the boss of a Line Crew for a power company.
Your points are well taken during fair weather, but in an approaching Cat 5, have little relevance, IMO.
During a mandatory evacuation it’s the responsibility of the individual, their families, and the LOCAL AUTHORITIES to have a PLAN to help evacuate the poor, elderly, disabled ahead of the storm.
NOBODY should attempt shelter in place, REGARDLES of the type of structure. Both strong & flimsy structures can collapse & any structure can flood.
In New Orleans, homes survived but people drowned in their attics.
Not whom, but what.
Per the story, the answer would seem readily apparent.
Nothing could've been done to avoid the tragedy that unfolded. The storm was too unpredictable to anticipate which islands to evacuate in time. There was a danger that any evacuation would've brought people into the eye of the storm.
It's foreign to us that man isn't in charge all the time. My heart goes out to those wonderful and grateful (by all accounts) people. They do seem to be welcoming of the help they receive.
And maybe I wasn’t clear enough in my original statement. I’m not faulting any of these people for being poor or not being able to build a home that can withstand any storm, let alone a Cat 5 storm that was, for all intent, stalled over the island.
They should have been helped, just as the people in Puerto Rico should have been helped and the folks in New Orleans. But, interestingly, in the latter 2, after the dust started to settle, instead of it all being the Presidents(at the time) fault, we soon learned of all the corruption, theft and indifference by officials in both places that left their people struggling. I’m not saying the Bahamian government is to blame for anything. But I’d rather things calm down a bit, get to cleaning up and sorting things out.
My issues are stories like this one. Absolutely horrible situation. But, not as bad as the guy that watched his 5yr old get swept out to sea, basically. I see this article and some other reporting I’ve read as another attempt to make the US and the President look bad.
Just the other day some guy from Florida spent about $50k of his own money to buy generators to send to the island. Tyler Perry sends a plane with supplies and takes those that need medical attention off the island. And I think that’s awesome.
I’m quite sure that there is a substantial amount of aid headed there, from the US, even if its just sending the USS Comfort or Mercy there to help with medical issues. I would have absolutely no problem with that, in fact I hope that both ships are on the way.
What I don’t see is, a hospital ship from China, Russia or the EU. I don’t see the Saudi’s, Emirati’s or anyone else sending a fleet of ships and planes to assist. Maybe they are. I’m in Iraq, so I get to the news when I can.
I went on a cruise in January 2018 that stopped at PR, St. Thomas, and St. Martaan. Of the three, PR was not great. Nobody faults them a few cruise ships each day as they rebuilt. PR had eight cruise ships in port and a festival in San Juan while people were still suffering horrifically from the storm. It seemed a lot more effort and resources should’ve been spent helping those less fortunate residents. St. Martaan, St. Thomas, and St. John all had much more balance, and with obvious repair going on.
And then folks are still going after the President for the things he said about PR. The San Juan mayor is still running her mouth. And what do we know?
We know that the Governor of PR is gone due to the corruption that the President was talking about.
The San Juan mayor, while insulting and talking smack about the President and lack of aid, is doing so from a warehouse full of food and water. Much of which went bad. It’s all about priorities.
From what you wrote, the folks in St Thomas/Martaan, know that they make a living off tourists and expats. Better get things tidied up quick so they can get back to business.
The folks on PR, it would seem, are just looking for more handouts and someone to blame for their incompetence.
