a woman staying on an island in a lake that straddles the border between Minnesota and Ontario, Canada has been killed by a black bear
...
The 62-year-old woman was staying at a remote family cabin on Red Pine Island in Rainy Lake. The island, in Canadian waters, is about 10 miles northeast of International Falls.
...
Ontario Provincial Police Constable Jim Davis says the woman, who was staying with her parents from Minnesota, went outside when she heard her two dogs barking Sunday evening and never returned. Davis says the parents called police who shot the bear after finding it standing over the womans body.

Need the right dogs.
The mother had two of her children in the yard, one in a stroller.
When she saw the bear she grabbed the child nearest to her and took the baby to safety. She ran out to the second child in the stroller, but the bear had already grabbed the baby.

It’s always something no matter where you live. Tornadoes in the middle states, sharks and hurricanes on the coast, wildfires in the west, gangs in urban areas above the Mason/Dixon line, bears to the north and illegals everywhere.
KInda like eColi.
Those at greatest risk are the very young and very old.
I’m a 6’2 former infanteer, not afraid of much. I see black bears almost daily. I see Grizz a few times a month too. I am far more concerned with the blacks. I’ve had many times where I’ve had my thumper in my hands and ready to use it. I try not to drop wildlife on lease sites, but if it’s me or them, it’ll be them every time. They are crafty, and not afraid usually. The wildlife courses I’ve taken are full of liberal nonsense.
A black bear will snap you like a twig. They consider it tenderizing. City people.
“just wondering why older people would pick such a remote location for a vacation.”
Maybe that’s the point; remoteness. Perhaps the Bahamas would’ve been better?
Is that in Kentucky? We see them walking across the street here on rare occasion. No attacks so far.
I’m not in the city. My nearest neighbor is 500 yards away and the next one is another thousand. I’m on 32 acres, surrounded by thousands of acres of farm and forest.
The black bears around here are usually not agressive. And the stats speak for themself. I looked ‘em up the last time there was a black bear thread. The males are worst, but they usually have to be really hungry. and if it is the right season, you probably should bring a gun with you into the woods. You never know.
But they are not Grizzlies, and they are not T-Rex.
There really is a difference.
Yeah. I’m thinking the dogs cornered the bear, wouldn’t back off and really got that bear pissed.
When the woman came along that bear was in fight-mode and slapped the shit out of her and her dogs.
No, I’m in northern Alberta, land of the wild heh. Wolves, cougars, bears, etc.
The nice thing about living here is that these are all threats that can be dealt with by a proper lead placement. Unlike the south or Australia where there is lots of small things that can be potent.
Winters can be chilly though.
Poor baby
I live in a very rural part of New England and we see black bears routinely.
I had one that greeted me (and my mutt) from just outside the garage one morning when I opened the electric garage door opener.
I had another one sneak into the garage to open the garbage container and run off with a bag full of garbage.
If you leave the garbage out overnight here the odds are about 50-50 a bear will help themselves.
On garbage pickup day you can drive around the rural roads and the odds are good that you will see at least one tipped-over garbage container and a big mess next to it.
All of that said, the black bears will run away when the dog barks at them—and my dog loves barking at black bears.
He even trees them from time to time!
Until they don't.
“Seems to me a gun might have a really good use here.”
They were in Canada.Maybe after 15 different permits, stamps, fees, physical and mental exams, police interviews etc. they might let you bring in a single shot 22. After a 6 month cooling off period.
Got to wonder why a 62 year old woman would be doing staying in a place like that with her parents, who must be pushing 90.
______________
Why would you wonder that people go to the woods for vacation?
What is wrong with you?
Our town hasn’t had a black bear attack in the memory of anyone living here.
We are more likely to get struck by lightning.
(Neither is impossible, of course.)
“My nearest neighbor is 500 yards away and the next one is another thousand.”
That’s too crowded...especially if neighbors are democrats.
And both require respect and proper avoidance behavior.
