Official advice on low-fat diet and cholesterol is wrong, says health charity (UK, 2016)

Urging people to follow low-fat diets and to lower their cholesterol is having “disastrous health consequences”, a health charity has warned.

In a damning report that accuses major public health bodies of colluding with the food industry, the National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration call for a “major overhaul” of current dietary guidelines. They say the focus on low-fat diets is failing to address Britain’s obesity crisis, while snacking between meals is making people fat.

Instead, they call for a return to “whole foods” such as meat, fish and dairy, as well as high-fat, healthy foods including avocados, arguing: “Eating fat does not make you fat.”

The report – which has caused a huge backlash among the scientific community – also argues that saturated fat does not cause heart disease while full-fat dairy, including milk, yoghurt and cheese, can actually protect the heart.

Processed foods labelled “low fat”, “lite”, “low cholesterol” or “proven to lower cholesterol” should be avoided at all costs, and people with type 2 diabetes should eat a fat-rich diet rather than one based on carbohydrates...

So Keto is really just another diet that restricts calories, but places incredible strain on your kidneys due to the higher percentage of fat. Doesn't seem all that healthy to me when you could, instead, eat a balanced diet and just restrict total caloric intake.

Reminds of of the guy who ate nothing but McDonald's for several months but lost lots of weight because he dramatically increased the amount of exercise he engaged in.

Years ago I read about the high calorie diet Michael Phelps used to consume while training. It was a daily total of ~ 12,000 calories, mostly from carbs. He was in great shape with exceptional blood work. Carbs are not the enemy. Total calories and a sedentary lifestyle are.

None of us needs to end up chronically unhealthy as we age, and it’s not hard to change to the better habits.

Well for the rest of us who aren’t Olympic Swimmers, Keto makes more sense.

And I seriously doubt that Michael Phelps eats like that now, at least I hope he doesn’t.

I’ve seen plenty of athletes who were in tip-top shape in their playing days, who got fat once they retired, because they didn’t give up eating the carbs.

You are not getting the nutrition you need when you fill up with processed foods, no matter how *fortified* it is.

Dr. Noakes is a PRIME EXAMPLE of that. Super-marathon runner...blew up in weight, diabetes, essentially had a death sentence like his father (who was killed by diabetes), but more in the Iranian time frame, rather than the US time frame (i.e., decades).

I know there are conflicting reports about it, and perhaps the biggest problem is for those who are overweight and losing weight on the keto diet since it’s such a radical change in eating and there’s the sudden weight loss that happens.

I suspect that it would be better for people who want to cut their carbs to do it more slowly than going keto cold turkey.

I haven’t found any. The most that I could find was a Business Insider story about increased risk of kidney stones if you go too protein rich on Keto and don’t drink enough liquids - but then again, no one here has brought that up.

So, since you cannot back up your claim, please don’t troll here, there are plenty of other threads where you’re welcome to do that. We’re trying to get and help people be HEALTHY, particularly if they’re Type 2 diabetic, or heading that way.

In fact, I have a feeling it’s one of the reasons that a lot of former NFL players are having problems.

Yes, concussions and the hits certainly may play a role, but I also believe part of it is the amount of carbs they eat during their careers, even though they appear to be healthy, that garbage is still wreaking havoc on the inside.

No, you are wrong. Metabolic acidosis’s six causes have nothing to do with a Keto diet.

Mr. mm wanted to lose weight and I told him that for every meal we had at home I’m provide two low carb veggies.

He also started cutting his white flour intake.

I suggested to him that when he eats, if he’s going to do pasta, eat the meats and the veggies first and fill up on those, and THEN do the pasta. Then he wouldn’t eat so much because he wouldn’t be chowing down on that when he was really hungry and eating too much as a result.

We have found that gradual changes are much easier to adapt to than a massive overhaul of the diet.

The First Law of Thermodynamics says you can't get something from nothing. The diet charlatans want you to believe that there are all sorts of complex components to losing weight other than the simple explanation of eat less energy than you burn and you will lose weight. That very simple and accurate advice works but, unfortunately, it doesn't sell diet books, diet plans or diet food.

Yes, this is advice for people with healthy bodies. Those suffering from other maladies will have other challenges to overcome to lose weight. However, that represents a minuscule percentage of the population. For the vast majority of people, losing weight, and gaining the benefits from doing so, is simply a matter of calories in vs. calories out.

Thanks, kind of split 50/50. Since it’s more like 99/1 for pre-diabetic conditions to worsen, I’d say the alternative to Keto isn’t so hot either.
