Lisa Stansfield, one of the best female pop singers ever. Today is the first time I've heard her voice. Amazing voice, God-given talent. I love great vocals, glad I discovered her tonight.
DIMASH KUNDAIBERGEN!!
So glad to know other FReepers have heard of him!!
OMG I recently discovered that Cossack kid (from Kazakhstan) and despite the language barrier, I can just close my eyes & listen to his MAGNIFICENT multi-octave voice for HOURS!
Yes, this thread is about female vocalists— but his mezzo-soprano puts the ladies to shame!
Dusty Springfield — Dusty In Memphis is a great album!
YouTube wouldn’t let me link to it due to copyright.
YMMV.
Joni Mitchell’s Blue album—a favorite of mine.
She’s also an accomplished jazz musician. Saw her in concert way back with Tom Scott & L.A. Express.
Here’s a sample of that collaboration:
Her Mingus album is really fine, IMO, but as you say, not for everybody.
I also enjoyed her similar work on the album
“Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter”. She would get pilloried today for that album cover, showing her in Blackface. It didn’t bother me one bit. Performing is often about transforming yourself. Even if for only a three minute period of time.
We ARE of the same age - just turned 67, so this is somewhat of a trip down memory lane ;)
Keeping with the theme of original artists whose work is performed by others, in this case, Rondstat, Bonnie Raitt, and others, I give you Karla Bonoff:

Enjoy!

Yes! There are no words to adequately describe such talent.
Joni did Shadows & Light with Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and Jaco Pastorius, and Michael Brecker.
The late great Laura Nyro— songwriter of many hits recorded by others:

Yep, good stuff!
I like a lot of female Polish singers, I wish Basia did more songs in her native language. There’s just something about a female singing in Polish.
Ania Dabrowska, is a singer I really like, although I’ve been disappointed with her recent material, but when she does the more jazzier stuff it’s great....
Some of my favorites from her:

Thanks! I actually have a “Wayfaring Stranger” playlist with versions by a dozen artists! Look forward to hearing her version tonight.
“Where are the present day Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklins, Ricki Lee Joneses, Patsy Clarks, Winona Judds? Women who could really belt them out.”
You may laugh, sneer or even be repulsed, but Lady Gaga is classically trained, actually quite literate with her lyrics (racy as they can be at times) and can really belt one out. Fairly patriotic too, despite the wild rumors that circulated years ago.
Another LOL! I was cruising through music a couple months ago and stumbled upon some contemporary artist’s cover of “Someone to Lay Down Beside Me” which was just so-so. That made me think of Karla Bonoff who I hadn’t thought of in decades, so I bought her version on iTunes.
Weyes Blood
aka
Natalie Laura Mering
Very, very groovy
I’ve heard some of Gaga’s serious stuff. She definitely has talent.
I found here on Youtube a couple of years ago and I was mesmerized. I have here on my list and really enjoy it every time it comes around.
OK, after all the comments I finally decided to give her a listen. Nope that’s not for me. I just want to hear a singer without so much affectation, stylization and falseness.
So, what do you think of Yma Sumac?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JWxNqyIRtk
Sumac became an international success based on her extraordinary vocal range. She had an undisputed 4 1/2 octave range, and often 5 in perfect conditions.
“...Wayfaring Stranger playlist with versions by a dozen artists!”
Then you may already have the Trace Adkins version he performed at the Johnny Cash tribute concert

as well as this one by Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra from Oslo. Who knew Norwegians were into bluegrass?
