Wisconsin family finds live frog in store-bought salad

Aug. 19 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin family said they were shocked to discover a live frog inside the salad they bought from a local supermarket.

Karlie Allen said her family bought the plastic container of Simple Truth Organic lettuce salad at the Pick 'n Save store in Glendale and didn't discover until inside their home that the container also housed a live frog.

Allen said her family planned to return the salad with the frog intact the next morning, but they discovered the amphibian escaped the container overnight and was perched on an outlet by the kitchen counter.

The Allens decided to put the frog outside and returned the lettuce for a refund.

Roundy's Supermarkets, Inc., Pick 'n Save's parent company, explained the situation in a statement provided to WTMJ-TV.

"These situations happen from time to time when organic products are involved. USDA Certified Organic items must be free of synthetic additives and certain pesticides," the statement said.

"Although rare, from time-to-time we do see insects and other small animals such as frogs make it through packaging with fresh produce items. In this instance, the customer returned the organic lettuce for an even exchange."

If you saw the people working there you would never eat a salad again from those chains.

I don't. I don't eat at salad bars, either............

A biologist friend told me if you hear frogs croaking at night, its a sign of a healthy local ecosystem.

I live in a subdivision north of Detroit in S.E. Michigan and I miss the sounds of frogs and such at night.

On the other hand, my niece lives way north of me and her back yard backs up to a woods with a pond way back inside of it.

Every spring her back patio and gutters are filled with tree frogs and the chirping and croaking is incessant..........I envy her.

And she has lots of lightning bugs as does my nephew where he loves.............I miss seeing them too.

Spiders I can handle. They eat other bugs, and will pretty much leave you alone.......

When my daughters were young, they fussed about me gigging frogs for fried frog legs...

I told them I only got one leg off each frog...They said that was good...It had at least one leg left...

Then I told them I did it so they would just swim in a circle and make it easier for me to get the next time...

I leave spiders be in my house for much the same reason unless they are building webs where I don’t want them. When you clear the webs, they are also smart enough not to rebuild them in the same place, at least for awhile.

As long as there are no bugs in their ammo, Wal-Market’s still on my list. But really, it’s the 2-leg bugs pushing carts at the Wal-Market that I don’t like.

Everyone is a victim these days...looking to cash in. All she got was an even swap.

I'd like to know how the frog "escaped the container" during the night. Smells fishy.

Cool family and very good wife with a great concern for the nice little critter. Glad they didn’t hurt it and turned it loose. When I was a kid my dad would put boards into our basement’s window wells so frogs and toads that fell in could get out. I always like a happy ending like this one.

LOL!! Reminds me of the original “Muppet Movie” scene where the villain, who’s captured Kermmit, brags about his nefarious plot to set up a chain of restaurants selling frogs’ legs. Kermit gets a sick look on his face and says, “Imagine, thousands of tiny wheel chairs.”

The original “Muppet Show,” in the 1970s, was great family entertainment because Jim Henson could write on a screamingly funny level that appealed to children and adults. I was a great fan.

I live in the SW corner of the state, where is says, 'COWS.' I can attest. We Have Cows. I see one or more cows every day of my life - even in the winter months, but they dress for the elements. ;)

That was a full sized, healthy adult frog.
Good for the customer, she took a video of the sealed container with the frog moving about inside.

Stuff happens when no pesticide is used.

These people need some life skills! We have people actually excited when they open a head of lettuce to find a frog ( in our conventionally grown lettuce;)). And fellow freeper is correct, not news.
