The dutch have suffered some brutal occupations, from the Roman empire and Viking raids to Spanish and Nazi rule. But now they face an even larger army of invaders: tourists.
In the era of cheap flights and Airbnb, their numbers are staggering. Some 19 million tourists visited the Netherlands last year, more people than live there. For a country half the size of South Carolina, with one of the worlds highest population densities, thats a lot. And according to the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions, the number of annual visitors is projected to increase by 50 percent over the next decade, to 29 million. Urban planners and city officials have a word for what the Netherlands and quite a few other European countries are experiencing: overtourism. With such an influx of humanity comes a decline in quality of life. Residents complaints range from inconvenience (crowds spilling from sidewalks to streets) to vandalism to alcohol-induced defilement (vomiting in flower boxes, urinating in mailboxes).

That’s a lot of tourists.
Any money to be made if I move there and open a pizzeria? :)
Enjoy your Muslims, you Europeans who look down on Americans!
Heh, the Atlantic shows its daily idiocy.
Tourists? Bad.
Muslims? Nothing to see here, move along, move along.
“Coffee”Shop and sell wacky tobacco and Space Cake (brownies).
We lived there 45 months and kids and loved it!
I got it WRONG!!
I thought Dutch were from Denmark before I looked it up.
It’s only 9am and I’ve been wrong about 3 things :)
Wow. Cool :)
Peeing in a mailbox in the Netherlands?
Theres an addition to my Bucket List.
What is the difference between Holland and the Netherlands? The Netherlands consists of 12 provinces but many people use Holland when talking about the Netherlands.
The official name of the country is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander is the king of the nation. Holland actually only means the two provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland. However, the name Holland is often used when all of the Netherlands is meant.
“The number of tourists will increase by 50%..” Sure it is; because there is absolutely no threat that the muslims will control Denmark the way they control France Sweden and England. - Sure thing - just keep believing that.
I did not know ANY of that.
Interesting.
It’s not a sovereign nation anymore, it’s part of the EU. They can’t control their borders. A lot of Europe has become a Disney-like attraction for the wealthy or affluent of the rest of the world. I mean, what other use is there for places like Holland or France?
Until their complete dissolution and takeover by non-Europeans, they just need to get used to it.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I used “Holland” in my post because it sounds more quaint and touristy, calling up visions of wooden shoes, silver skates and windmills. It’s not a real country any more. It’s just a geographical area within the EU.
Of course, as I recall, some years ago, what remained of the Dutch people voted to leave the EU. Their betters explained to them what the Democrats are trying to explain to us now. You can vote yourself into socialist serfdom. But you can’t vote your way out.
Double Dutch.
Don’t tell the Frisians that. :-)
Actually there are a lot of pizza places in Amsterdam.
De Pizzabakkers near the Hyatt Regency there was pretty good when we were there back in May.
So you might have some competition.
Mom taught me how to make from scratch but I guess being part of Europe, they have their fair share of authentic pizzerias and Italian restaurants.
