Teslas Model 3 is cheaper on a total cost of ownership basis than competing luxury sedans from BMW and Mercedes, but a Toyota Camry? Model 3 is a state-of-the-art electric vehicle with a 5-star safety rating and a driving experience thats gotten rave reviews from every auto mag under the sun. Is it possible that its even in the same price class as the entry-level, reliable-but-dull Camry?
the figures for an Audi A5, and the result is
embarrassing? Game-changing? Adjectives fail us. The cost per mile of the German sedan over 5 years comes out to $0.80, a little less than double that of Model 3.

I’m not driving one of those ugly a** Toyoya Camrys! I’m quite happy with my Audi A4 Quattro S-line, thank you very much.
Im thinking Texasgator must be a lib troll from Austin where economics doesnt matter.
When you resort to attacking the messenger and not the message, you have lost.

PS, I once lived in the GREAT STATE of TEXAS and would not be messing with no cowboy.
Some are as tough as baling wire!
And smart too.
wait times
Are a real issue.
And not just at Tesla.
That is why most provide a loaner.
A friend had a Mercedes with a cast-aluminum oil pan, a replacement was a long ways off. he had it welded.
His fault, a manhole sitting high he did not see.
Battery efficiency, life and replacement costs?
Battery life in ultra hot Phoenix was not that great when I used to live there.
Battery power was often inconveniently MIA in the ultra cold midwestern winters when I used to live there.
Today, batteries are not all that inexpensive to replace, but with a flat road or just a small incline to get it rolling, I could still start the truck, even if the battery was dead.
The e-car groupies will never describe their affection correctly - not unlike leftists calling ILLEGAL ALIENS "immigrants".
It's NOT an electric car.
It's a coal or nuclear powered car with a limited range and a toxic & hazardous power cell.
No thanks - I'll take a gasoline powered car any day of the week.
Any cost savings from battery-only electric cars will go up in smoke the minute states begin to see a slump in gas tax revenues. Oregon already has imposed a wheel tax on electric vehicles for just this reason.
Those same auto rags had rave reviews for the Corvair, Pinto and Pacer when they came out.
Things they didn’t include:
Cost of a charging station in your home.
The pro-rated cost of a new battery. Although it is a one time expense, it must be included in the five year average. It appears their calculations were for approximately 20K miles per year and the life of the battery is about 125K miles, 4/5 of the cost of a new battery should be included.
The cost of motel rooms you have to rent because you had to stop to recharge.
The opportunity cost of the time wasted waiting to recharge.
The actual cost of maintenance on a new Camry. The number cited is ridiculous.
The actual cost of insurance. The numbers cited are questionable.
The costs related to travel to your nearest Tesla dealer when you need service. (very dependent upon home location)
The assumption that anyone is going to pay $19K for a car that’s about to need a battery. The current Tesla battery replacement batteries are 10K-24K. I question the resale estimate figures given.
I bought a used 2014 Camry from Hertz in 2015 For $15K. I have driven it for four years. Other than tires, filters and oil changes, my only maintenance cost was the replacement of a rear passenger door handle. The $4K figure for maintenance is ridiculous. The tires came to a total of about $900, the door handle about $100, and oil and filter changes about $350.
So my answer... Buy a used Camry and drive it until it has to be towed to a junk yard. My 1995 Dodge Dakota has been much cheaper yet. $2,000 to buy and $800 in repairs over 5 years.
A name brand mid-level charger costs about $500 and draws less current than the arc welder in my garage.
Single-phase, plug and play for me.
In my area a 100 amp panel is the code minimum, and 200 is recommended.
You may need a 220 receptacle in the garage/.
For 10k you could get solar panels on the garage to boot!
If you had a Tesla you could go for a nice ride up in the hill country and be back home for some nice local BBQ!
Paid for by the savings(?)
For a nice Saturday! I used to live out that way.
Once upon a time, nice memories forme.
Service is where all new products go to die
And Tesla is working hard to make theirs the most un-serviceable car on the market. Also the cost of Electricity is far underestimated, especially in California.
Last, I challenge anyone who wants to make any real road trip to find charging stations, and not have to map things out based on finding them
why did they pick these cars to compare?
Because the Camry is considered very reliable and inexpensive.
The clear winner is to purchase someone like a 15-year-old Toyota Corolla.
In my misspent youth, all my friends drove $100 beaters.
My preference was high mile Volvos, tow them home and rebuild the engine, the bodies last a long, long time.
As I tried of Mr Lucas and moved up the food chain I had a company ride. And became used to having the car start in ALL weather!
If not for governments passing laws forcing the creation of electric cars and subsidizing them, there would be none today.
The Federal subsidy only goes to the first 200,000 cars sold, Tesla is about there. See link above.
Electric cars will never meet my needs from an automobile, and for me therefore, will never be better.
Never is a very long time.
Tesla batteries have held up exceptionally well.
You may want to figure in a bit more battery life:
The Battery and Drive Unit in your vehicle are covered for a period of: Model S and Model X 8 years (with the exception of the original 60 kWh battery manufactured before 2015, which is covered for a period of 8 years or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first).
Vehicle Warranty | Tesla
https://www.tesla.com/support/vehicle-warranty
I could still start the truck, even if the battery was dead.
Not with an automatic made this century.
No rear pumps.
And the first Teslas were very nice looking cars. The current models are butt ugly, just like the Camry. And with the Tesla, you have to pay extra for any color other than white (as much as $2K extra).
Those same auto rags had rave reviews for the Corvair...
Drove a 68 Covair for many years, sold to a friend and he many more trouble-free miles??
Oh, you believed the Nader BS about 45-degree axel swing and tuck??
Sorry, it is BS.
Many suppositions, not so much to back them up?
True, it is hard to beat a good cheap beater.
As usual, an electric car propaganda piece that doesn’t show their math but makes wild claims.
“So you dont have a problem with their facts?”
How did you jump to that conclusion? I took it that the poster was taking argument from their propaganda claims.
There were no facts presented in the article. A fact required references to the claims, not just made up numbers.
The dumbing down of America on display: We have posters that don’t even know what a fact is.
“So theyre freeloaders like bicyclists who use the infrastructure that gas tax pays for. Right?”
Right.
“Many suppositions, not so much to back them up?”
Yes. I believe the site did make many suppositions that don’t hold up under scrutiny.
