Cleantech news ^ | 17 Aug 2019 | Charles Morris

Tesla’s Model 3 is cheaper on a total cost of ownership basis than competing luxury sedans from BMW and Mercedes, but a Toyota Camry? Model 3 is a state-of-the-art electric vehicle with a 5-star safety rating and a driving experience that’s gotten rave reviews from every auto mag under the sun. Is it possible that it’s even in the same price class as the entry-level, reliable-but-dull Camry?

the figures for an Audi A5, and the result is … embarrassing? Game-changing? Adjectives fail us. The cost per mile of the German sedan over 5 years comes out to $0.80, a little less than double that of Model 3.

Yeah, all of these green electric car enthusiasts want to elect democrats who will then kill the industries Trump has promoted which has brought the cost of electricity.

Elect democrats and they will kill off any economy to be found. They forget the Kenyan fascist who bragged to us all that our electric rates will skyrocket.

And is that before the tax credits (subsidy) for purchasing an electric vehicle?

“What do you expect from a pro-electric website?”

So you don’t have a problem with their facts?

And Tesla owners aren’t burdened with paying any gas taxes to maintain roads.

Now add in the real-life expenses of the cost of the typical tesla 3 vs cost of the typical camry.

A quick look at the numbers cited raises an obvious question for me. The Tesla comes in way under the Toyota and Audi in "Maintenance/Repairs": $1,200 vs. $4K and $8K respectively. Fair enough. The electric car doesn't need routine oil changes, fluid level checks or have as complicated a transmission. But, and this is a big but, sooner or later, that battery will need to be replaced, and that one time cost is not only inevitable, but also significant, and this is where the figures cited in the article become dishonest.

That battery replacement may not figure into the first few years of ownership and operation which is the period the article covers. But it will invariably figure into the resale value, which does not seem to have been factored into the resale value figure cited in the article.

“They just had a deal fall through with a rental company.”

The rest of the story from their CEO:

says Moeller. “Although we consider the Model 3 to be the best electric car in the world today, ...nextmove says that it continued to try buying Model 3’s from Tesla through online orders

The maintenance cost they assume for the camry over 5 years is outrageously high. It’s not 4 grand over 5 years.

Article pulls a few rabbits out of their butts.. Thats if you sell your car after 5 years. take away the resale value and the teslsa does not beat a camry. Are 5 year old tesla 3’s worth 19 grand? what about the battery? is it still good after 5 years?

“And Tesla owners aren’t burdened with paying any gas taxes to maintain roads.”
So they’re freeloaders like bicyclists who use the infrastructure that gas tax pays for. Right?

The article is misleading. Electricity costs vary, a lot, from state to state, and on the basis of the time of day (as much as 4-5 x more at certain times of day). New York, California, and Connecticut, for example, have Kw/hour rates significantly higher than the $0.11 they are quoting in he article. Hawaii, for example, has Kw/hr rates of ~$0.33/hr.

They also do not mention the cost of buying and installing a home charging station, which could easily cost more than $2,000.

The first Model 3s to roll off a production line occurred in July 2017. Thus, any estimate of 5 year repair costs are based upon limited data.

As another FReeper pointed out, there are no guarantees that electricity prices will continue to be what they are now - particularly when demand goes up.

As an aside, I find it interesting that the ‘green’ crowd are against using air conditioners - as they use too much energy (electricity), but are advocating for everyone’s car to be electric. Estimates are that a single charge of an electric car is equivalent to running an air conditioner for 6 hours.

Finally, there's the big question of what is the carbon footprint of producing the electricity for electric cars, and obtaining the raw materials for the batteries, etc., and how does this compare to the decreases in carbon production by switching to electric cars? (I know there are estimates out there, but it seems that they vary and that there are always variables that are ignored).

Their figures are doctored to make the model 3 look better.

A Camry more expensive to insure than a Tesla? Yeah right.

Resale that high on a Tesla & that low on a Camry? No way.

Maintenance $4000 on a Camry? I’ve got a half million miles over three camrys and the only unscheduled maintenance I’ve ever had was replacing a $50 battery. Oil changes are $30 every 10k miles, tires wear out on both cars. That $4000 figure is not even remotely realistic.

A classic case of fudged numbers, the writer has a future as a democratic vote counter.
