Things they didn’t include:

Cost of a charging station in your home.

The pro-rated cost of a new battery. Although it is a one time expense, it must be included in the five year average. It appears their calculations were for approximately 20K miles per year and the life of the battery is about 125K miles, 4/5 of the cost of a new battery should be included.

The cost of motel rooms you have to rent because you had to stop to recharge.

The opportunity cost of the time wasted waiting to recharge.

The actual cost of maintenance on a new Camry. The number cited is ridiculous.

The actual cost of insurance. The numbers cited are questionable.

The costs related to travel to your nearest Tesla dealer when you need service. (very dependent upon home location)

The assumption that anyone is going to pay $19K for a car that’s about to need a battery. The current Tesla battery replacement batteries are 10K-24K. I question the resale estimate figures given.

I bought a used 2014 Camry from Hertz in 2015 For $15K. I have driven it for four years. Other than tires, filters and oil changes, my only maintenance cost was the replacement of a rear passenger door handle. The $4K figure for maintenance is ridiculous. The tires came to a total of about $900, the door handle about $100, and oil and filter changes about $350.

So my answer... Buy a used Camry and drive it until it has to be towed to a junk yard. My 1995 Dodge Dakota has been much cheaper yet. $2,000 to buy and $800 in repairs over 5 years.

Many suppositions, not so much to back them up?

True, it is hard to beat a good cheap beater.

My 2014 Camry is a pretty sweet car.
Smooth, quiet, roomy, classy looking, seems well engineered and even a real nice color....Cosmic Grey. (Really a dark metalic blueish color, the sun does tricks with the paint)
If i was 30 again maybe i’d like the Audi mentioned above but at 52 that Camry is just fine by me.
As a plus i bought it off-lease in brand new condition very low miles for half of what it retailed for.

Now that i think about it i would never have wanted to own a Audi that wasn’t fully warranted including a loaner car and overnight stay and towing compensation..
