Paleo Diet Linked to High Levels of Harmful Gut Bacteria

People who follow the Paleo diet often do so for health reasons, eschewing many carbs, especially grains, in favor of lean meats and vegetables. Now, research indicates that this “caveman” style of eating may have hidden dangers to your heart health.

The Paleo diet, which draws nutritional guidelines from the diets of our human ancestors, advocates eating like a hunter and gatherer—consuming lots of meat, vegetables, nuts, and some fruits—while excluding agriculturally-based foods such as grains, legumes, and dairy, along with refined sugar and processed oils.

Though no one would argue the nutritional merits of vegetables and lean protein, pulling whole grains out of the diet may have some harmful hidden consequences with regard to the gut microbiome and how it affects cardiovascular health, according to a new study published in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Researchers from Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia, compared the gut microbiomes and levels of trimethylamine-n-oxide (TMAO)—a key blood biomarker strongly associated with heart disease—of 44 people who followed the Paleo diet for at least one year with a similar group of 47 people who followed the recommended Australian diet that includes whole grains.

They discovered that those who ate Paleo had levels of TMAO twice as high as their non-Paleo eating peers.

The reason? A lack of whole grains in the Paleo diet, lead researcher Angela Genoni, Ph.D., said in a press release.

“We found the lack of whole grains were associated with TMAO levels, which may provide a link between the reduced risks of cardiovascular disease we see in populations with high intakes of whole grains,” she said in the release.

Geez what a dumb study.

You can eat clean low carb, paleo, whatever, and get plenty of probiotics for your gut bugs. Seeds, stalky veggies, and of course you can supplement any number of powdered resistant starches for the gut bugs.

It’s eating high carb sugary diets that cause the wrong gut bug species to go wild.

Remove “processed” from your diet and you will be better off.

"People who follow the Paleo diet often do so for health reasons, eschewing many carbs, especially grains, in favor of lean meats and vegetables."

"Though no one would argue the nutritional merits of vegetables and lean protein..."

Note the emphasis on lean meat. That's part of the problem. It's the fat you need, not lean meat. They can't let go of their biases long enough to really test this.

I’m starting the DASH diet because my blood pressure had been creeping up in the past few years; it runs on my Dad’s side of the family.

Also - so many in my family are diabetic...and I’m NOT going there!

Also - taking care of my 82 year old Dad who retired at 55 and didn’t MOVE a muscle since then, high-fat diet, lots of Brandy and Beer, ex-smoker, but the damage has been done. All of his current ailments are lifestyle/diet/sedentary related...I’m not going THERE, either!

My diet is pretty good as is, but I can always improve.

I am still trying to figure out how so many of my family lived until their 80’s and 90’s.

This is going back to 1570, the record holder is my Great Uncle John who died at 107.

The best example is my Great Grandmother Born in dire poverty , a Push Cart Pioneer at three years old, died at 87, had 11 children and delivered 250 more as midwifep>

Agriculture is 10,000 years old. Even then it was not widespread.
A mere 500 generations.

Tell me again why and agricultural based diet is better than the hunter/forager diet? Other than the benefit of being more predictable and allowing for the specialization of human tasks.

Paleo is healthier, if one has the discipline to do it right.

As far as I can tell, CSIRO paid for the bulk of it. Climate Weenies.

What is CSIRO you ask?

“Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation is an independent Australian federal government agency responsible for scientific research. Its chief role is to improve the economic and social performance of industry for the benefit of the community. “ Wikipedia

https://www.csiro.au/

“Through our cutting edge climate knowledge and services, CSIRO research is enabling a sustainable, resilient and productive future for Australia, our region and the world .

Our research
Understanding our climate and atmosphere
Our comprehensive and rigorous science is improving our understanding of Australia’s changing climate.

Planning for climate change
CSIRO research is helping to equip policy makers, industries and communities with the information and services they need to effectively plan for and adapt to the impacts of climate change.’

And so this was turned into s small cookbook that among other things, “Promotes low energy days”

Use simple, affordable wholesome ingredients
Are flavoured with herbs and spices
Use no added salt
Offer vegetarian options
Promote low energy days
Use a variety of foods
Provide options for left overs

CORRELLATION IS NOT CAUSATION....

There is ZERO evidence that these varying TMAO levels increase your risk for heart disease.

LOL, what do they think will have more bugs, something pulled out a plant, or fully cooked red meat?

Hubby and I are 2.5 weeks into keto lifestyle. He has lost probably 10-12 lbs. I don’t get on the scale but I sure feel better. More energy, less joint pain. Never thought I could do without sugar in my coffee after 100 years of loving my morning ritual..but now enjoy a cup with just some cream.

Hmmm, sounds a bit like ‘settled science’, which means we’re getting played, yet again.

“Remove “processed” from your diet and you will be better off.”.

. Would I though? Would I? It’s generally just meat and veggies for me during the week, but come Friday it’s pounding pizza and Saturday ice cream. Bourbon is processed deliciously as well.

. I don’t want to live in a world that lacks those things.

Keto is not high-protein, it’s high fat.

Too much protein will still create an insulin response.

You may lose 10 pounds in your first week, but it will mostly be water.

Expect over time it to only be 1-3 pounds a week. But it’s better that way, since Keto tends to avoid the issues with sagging skin. But in the meantime, you’re still realizing all of the health benefits, even if you’re not at your target weight.

For the first time in years, I actually believe it’s possible for me to get down to my high school weight again, when I played all kinds of sports.

Hey, dfwgator, you have a recipe for Keto ice cream? My daughter made some when I was visiting her, simply delish stuff. Now she can’t find the recipe........

I do WheatBelly-GrainBrain diet, so avoid almost all grains, though have organic corn flakes a few times a week. And no-one is taking my potatoes away.
Ever.

A quick and dirty, “Fat Bomb” I like to make is taking some Cacao Powder and Swerve, add a bit of MCT Oil, then some butter, mix it all up and add in some Macadamia Nuts and stir it all up.
