National AR Lower Day (Vanity)
Self | 08/13/2019 | Super7man

In light of all the noise regarding gun control and "assault rifles" being now targeted for confiscation, I think we at FR need to stand up and declare a "National Buy an AR Lower Day".

All it takes is $80 to make a statement.

So what would be a good date?

It will be the best money you ever spent if they ban AR’s and start “buying them back”.

I was thinking. Maybe the Feds will start a Buy Back Program for ARs. Perhaps I’ll be able to turn in a stripped lower for maybe $300-$400.

Primary Arms in Houston had finished Lowers recently on sale for $28.

Amazing, but I wonder about the quality of finished, serialized lowers at such a cheap price.

If they're at least milspec, I'd buy several.

28 bucks does sound rather cheap. I paid $50 for the last one I bought in Houston, it was an Anderson Arms, I have assembled and used it, it worked fine. I’d pay at least that for a couple more...

If they do they won’t get mine.

I refuse to play.

They are made by Anderson. Are good quality and mil-spec.

I’ve seen Anderson disparaged as The Poverty Pony in one AR group. No problems with mine, but I don’t run it hard.

Yeah, but 80%ers are expensive.

Under $40 from AAO, in Mississippi.

The AAO lowers in the above post are 10% off if you get a bulk pack of 5. They're milspec ande accept either GI or AR15 commercial parts, with the exception of having a non-visible threaded hole under the pistol grip for the early GI National Match adjustment to take up any slack or wobble with commercial or polymer upper receivers, I've never needed it with GI uppurs, but it is a hedge against future wear or the use of a replacement upper.

One of my 8 AR family rifles is an Anderson, and a very close friend built his Mk12 DMR target rifle up on one. They're one of the most consistent lowers on the market so far as adhering to the same dimensions receiver after receiver, year after year, and their 16-inch barrels are 1:8 twist and non-chrome lined, the same as the Army Advanced Marksmanship Unit Match Rifles.

I wouldn't trade my Andy lower for a Colt, nor a H&R, an FN nor a Bushmaster.

A Daniels Defense, maybe. The Anderson black finish coating is not the same as GI, but seems to wear better. I do run mine pretty hard.

Good to know. I found an upper that matches the finish on my Anderson, color-wise. I’m pretty happy with it. Comforting to know it can be ridden hard.

About the only 'issue' (if you can even call it that ;^) that I've ever had with Anderson lowers involved the mag well - a Hahn 9mm mag adapter would not fit. That was likely due to the mag well being just slightly too rounded in the corners, to accept the sharp-cornered Hahn product. A PSA 9mm adapter fit the Anderson perfectly, as did a couple of other adapters I tried, from different manufacturers.

A lot of guys jump on the band wagon for a particular brand (like Colt), and criticize anything without their favorite label on it. I knew a gun shop owner a few years ago, who was a big Stag Arms fan. In reality, "the proof is in the pudding" - does it work, or not? In my experience, Anderson lowers work.

I wouldn't trade my Andy lower for a Colt, nor a H&R, an FN nor a Bushmaster.

There's a good article available, over at Lucky Gunner, that includes a little info (related to a couple of Bushmaster ARs) about why it's unwise to put too much trust in a 'big-name label':

I’m amazed at what people will pay for a rollmark. A friend paid big bucks for a Rock River Arms. It was all that was available during a run on guns. I’ve only ever seen one gun with more slop between upper and lower, and that was an old cast Olympic Arms that someone dragged out and slapped a $1000 price tag on during the same run, I believe.

One warning to all: you will not stop at one. Oh, my no, it isn’t like potato chips, it’s like Legos made of crack cocaine. And watch out for scope creep: sure, you can throw in a Milspec trigger but that 3.5-lb drop-in only costs a little more, and that custom hand grip, buttstock, buffer and spring... Yes, that purple extended-latch charging handle and an iridescent oil-slick bolt carrier group on the upper will make the gun shoot better, honest...
