Apple Has Activated Software Locks on iPhone Batteries to Discourage Third-Party Repairs

Apple has activated a “dormant software lock” that effectively kneecaps third-party replacement batteries on some newer models of iPhone

Even using another Apple battery doesn’t work, according to iFixit, as a replacement battery can apparently only be authenticated using the company’s internal tools:

iFixit compared the practice to having a “Check Oil” light in a vehicle that can only be deactivated at a Ford dealership.

Auto companies lost the code fight, IIRC.

Apple’s gonna lose this one.

Not to menton God knows how many customers.

Except that’s not how a “check oil” light works. Or even a “check engine” light. This is typical Apple big-brother deviousness.

Good. When a non-standard battery is used, the Iphone doesn’t work right, and Apple gets blamed. Nuts to that.

The phone is designed to work with a certain battery, and other batteries won’t have the right characteristics, and people will come squawking to Apple for a problem caused by a cheap Chinese battery.

Almost makes me glad to have sold my AAPL a bit too soon.

I upgraded a couple of years ago, and wanted to give my 5S to my daughter. The battery was going, so I set up for Apple to replace it. They sent me a very nice shipping container and

I sent the 5S to them. Got it back and they didn’t replace the battery. Said it met their specifications.
This wasn’t a warranty repair or anything. I was going to pay for the battery swap.

I thought that was pretty strange.

Yup- and new cars you can ONLY buy their very expensive FOB keys- and can only get a certain number- usually 6-8 or so- then you have to have the whole ‘anti-theft’ device switched out IF you ever need more keys-

used to be i could get keys made for my vehicle for around $1 apiece- I had to get two new keys for my newer car recently from the dealer, because they had the chip in them, and they were $80 apiece

total ripoff-

Never owned an iPhone.. Would never buy another slow-as-molasses iPad. Regret buying a Google Samsung phone because of their politics and privacy abuses. What’s left? The Jitterbug? Ugh.

Is that to say, Apple will not replace a non-OEM battery?

And where does Apple source their batteries?
Do they not use the low bidder?

Not a good analogy. I could drive my Ford around as long as I didn't mind seeing the "Check Oil" light all the time.

What Apple has done could be likened to deactivating the car if the oil isn't changed at a Ford dealership.

I concur that it’s greed but it also seems to be something else:

Corporate tech types essentially cooking the books via elaborate means. They’ve already said that the uptake of new phones is slowing. The market and the product have matured. If they can’t force you to buy a new phone they’ll force you to abandon the old one. Samey same.

Corporate officers misreporting results in order to obtain bonuses is a common theme (I had an old boss, who was a cretin, get caught doing it and he went to jail). Apple and the oleaginous Tim Cook are attempting to do it with a bit of style and hiding in plain sight.

The sales numbers are important to them but so is the ego boost.

disagree that it’s a good thing about exclusive battery-

Sure people will squawk if their non apple battery screws things up- BUT- apple can make it very clear that there is no warranty if they use other batteries- and won’t be held liable- many companies make these same statements- (especially printer manufacturers- they aren’t held liable if someone uses a non product ink source and the printer stops working- apple wouldn’t be held liable either if they warned against using other batteries and soemoen ignored it)

Too bad Apple is the only company making “smart phones” … if only there were some competition in the market.

I know, it’s absolutely maddening- and believe me, there’s no easy way to circumvent the whole anti-theft crap in the cars either- i guess it can be done, but it’s complicated- and i think causes insurance to go up if it’s discovered and reported-
