A woman was dead after a bluff collapsed at Grandview Surf Beach in Encinitas Friday afternoon, authorities said.
Discarded beach chairs and sun hats could be seen near the portion of cliff that officials say sloughed off around 3 p.m. beneath a staircase giving access from the 1700 block of Neptune Avenue.
In addition to the fatality, four others were hurt. Two people were in critical condition, one of whom had to be airlifted for treatment, according to Encinitas Fire Chief Mike Stein.
Another two people suffered minor injuries. One of them was treated and released at the scene, while the other was taken to a hospital...

Very sad. And what is more scary, are the multi million dollar homes on bluffs whose front yards get smaller and smaller. And smaller...

I was at Moonlight beach last October.Which is about 4 miles north of Encinitas. I was walking with my wife and stayed far away from the cliff. They have signs warning of slides.

All the coastal California beachside bluffs and cliffs have warning signs top and bottom. I take them very seriously. I’m always amazed to see people right at the bottom of the cliffs.
On the topside of lots of bluffs, you can see large cracks in the rock ten or more feet away from the cliff edge.
To: BenLurkin
The cliffs near the San Diego coastline are unstable. Beach visitors should not sit near the cliffs.

I can’t figure out if they were on top of the bluff and fell or underneath it and got buried.

Yikes.
I was under the cliff at paradise cove last weekend. But I think its more rock than that solid sand stuff.

Grandview Beach is the north beach access point at Leucadia State Beach, a California state park that is run by the city of Encinitas. Grandview Beach is a narrow beach below high bluffs topped with homes and condo buildings that have a grand view of the ocean. At high tide there isnt much beach exposed, but otherwise this beach is excellent for walking. A long wooden stairway takes you down to the beach from the parking lot at the north end of Neptune Avenue near Grandview Street. Surfers hike up and down with their boards to enjoy the surf here as they do at Beacons Beach, the south access point of Leucadia State Beach about one mile away. There are no facilities here, but you could walk the beach north a half-mile to South Ponto Beach which has restrooms.

I'm sure it was caused by Global Warming. They're probably hard at work right now creating legislation to prevent erosion, which is just as silly as trying to control the weather.
I lived 100 yard from the Pacific for years. Collapsing cliffsides are frequent and normal. Some homeowners on the cliff edge spent enormous amounts of money to build rock barriers to prevent erosion but they will eventually undercut and collapse. It's Real Life folks! There are natural dangers.
