The University of South Australia's Australian Centre for Precision Health researchers examined links between body mass index (BMI) and more than 925 diseases in 337536 UK volunteers, confirming the link between obesity and conditions such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
"We conducted five different analyses and the more consistent the evidence for a causal association between obesity and health outcomes across these five different approaches, the more confident we could be that we were looking at the true causal effect," Professor Hypponen said.
She said while previous research suggested a high BMI was linked with increased risk of chronic diseases, the clinical trials used to asses health risks of obesity were typically too small or too short to assess causation with many of the diseases.
To overcome this challenge, Professor Hypponen said they used alternative statistical approaches.
"The results were really quite astounding," she said.
"Fully consistent evidence across all approaches was seen for 14 different diseases, and for 26 different diseases evidence was obtained by at least four of the five methods used.
Professor Hypponen said while all five of the approaches used to help prove causation rely on a number of statistical assumptions by working through each of the approaches, they were able to note consistent evidence of causal association.
One of the key findings, according to Professor Hypponen, was the strong the relationship observed between obesity and diabetes.
"For example, we saw evidence for obesity effects on peripheral nerve disorders, chronic leg and foot ulcers, and even gangrene and kidney failure, which are all known to be diabetic complications.
"This suggests a key aspect to reduce comorbidity risk in obesity is careful monitoring of blood sugar and effective control of diabetes and its complications."

The poor quality of what you eat and the excessive amounts that you eat cause obesity and disease. What makes you fat, makes you sick.
They are finding out that many diseases are diabetes related. It is all about excess sugar and insulin in the blood.
Keto IS the Magic Pill. I have lost 63 lbs since April 28. No cravings and I get to eat bacon steak and butter with NO GUILT!
I have clumps of haagen das throughout by epidermis.
MY
you know there is something fishy when "researchers" not only denigrate overweight people but call them out for the "bad" weight in their abdomen as opposed to the "good" weight in their fannies....( I always wondered if this was racist, frankly, since most blacks carry their weight in their fannies and thighs and its we whitey's that carry it in our abdomens)
I tried Keto for a time. It was okay but it isn’t good long term. At least that’s what my research determined. Still; it is a good way to drop weight and we do need fat and protein. It was an interesting experience going into ketosis. Felt like I had a cold for a while then all was good and I was burning fat instead of carbs/sugars.
What I also found was that I needed to drastically reduce my caloric intake to lose weight (under 900 cals a day) with or without keto. When I did that I was hungry ALL the time unless I was sick. Not acceptable. Still waiting for that magic pill to increase metabolism without increasing heart rate and blood pressure. Something that would make food less appealing as something pleasurable might work too. More than loss of appetite; make food taste bland. Maybe that’s why old people tend to get skinny (if they live that long). Food simply stops tasting good to them. Bottle that, whatever it is, and you will be a billionaire overnight.
Maybe one day science will advance to the point they can manipulate our genetics (after the fact of being born) to fix these life annoyances. Of course that will open a big ‘ole can of worms and maybe Pandora’s box too.
It all starts with carbs and the resulting high levels of insulin.
High fasting insulin will show you are on the path to diabetes ten years faster than yearly higher levels of glucose.
I found I was pre-diabetic a year ago. My PCP didn’t tell me, he just circled my fasting glucose of 117 and said nothing. I went online and was shocked to see I was borderline diabetic.
I went keto/carnivore, then six months later went for blood work. I insisted he add fasting insulin and A1C tests, neither of which he had requested in the thirty years I have been with him.
A1C is still a little hi at 5.7. Insulin is 11.7, would like to see half that.
Wow. That’s news. Never knew there was a connection between diabetes and obesity. (I did.)
Worked I guess. You don't like the truth, don't read my comments.
It was exactly the correct analogy to the people who know everything.
Congratulations on your success.
Both. But they have failed to identify why people cannot control obesity without extreme intervention in some cases.
I know why...
I wonder how much of it comes down to gut bacteria?
We’re just learning what sweeping influence they have.
Yeah funny guy you.
Until you find out that someone had relativess who suffered through that horror.
Then you see how foolish, unkind and immature your.comment.was.

Your comment was like that of an unfunny clown.
Peddle your garbage filth somewhere on a Nazi death camp humor board elswhere with please.
This sounds like headline news from 1947!
ALL of it, for most people.
Your just looking for things to pizza you off? I had relative starve to death that werent in a concentration camp, so buzz off.
So...let me see..you had a
“..relative starve to death that werent [sic] in a concentration camp, so buzz off.”
Therefore you make fun of starving people on one hand and demand sympathy for you and a relative who starved on the other hand.
You’re conflicted with your amoral attempt at humor.
Thank you for making my point.
