I live in a building that houses several middle aged “cat ladies”. Very, very strange people.

Depends on the cat. Depends on the owner. Depends on the upbringing.
We just took in two kittens, and the boy, Eustace, is constantly climbing up my back and rubbing his face on my cheek. Wendy also likes to climb on my shoulder, though she is more likely to give a cat bath.
My best cat, Jean-Marie, could hear a Slant-six engine at 600 yards, and would greet me as I pulled in. If the window was open, he'd jump into my lap. When I came back from my honeymoon, he meowed happily, and jumped into my arms and licked my face.
If you want a cat who is a bonding companion, you can have one. If you leave them be, they will make their own way.

Someone posted a meme the other day of three cats lounging in a cardboard box with the caption “this is where I keep my spare cats”...

Pet chickens are better. You would have eggs and could eat them if times get tough.
Don’t get Canadian Geese. They are democrats. Do not produce anything but follow you around and beg for food.

You forgot the geese crap on the sidewalk too. I got two shop cats, no mice and no spiders. The spiders have to many moving parts so the shop cats disassemble them, they dont have patience to reassemble them. The mice just disappear.

Get a parrot. At least it will call you by name when you get home.

I pulled a feral kitten out of a trap on Wednesday. A scared little spitfire. Blood everywhere on me, and my hands will probably never lose the scars. Today I was nestling her in my arms and doing little head butts. Yes, she’s purring, and exchanging sniffs with my dogs. We can’t keep this smoky grey kitten because we’re full up, but she has an excellent chance to have a good life with another family. It’s been 14 years since I last saved an animal’s life. The third time, and each time at some cost to me. Totally worth it. It doesn’t get old.

No, it doesn't. When we got our two kittens, they were already well socialized. It makes a big difference. You prepping "Smoky" for a new home is VERY important, and makes the difference between having a pet and just having a barn cat. Our kittens actually seek people out for company. Fortunately, they have each other, and have finally learned that we sleep at night.

When we got our two kittens, they were already well socialized. Our current cat was brought home from the local shelter after he practically forced niteowl77 to bring him home. He was (nominally) 2 years old, had been pinched by The Man for vagrancy and ended up in the can-- where he got his pills removed for the crime of havin' no dough. He had a serious - and undetected, of course - medical problem that required a cool grand for one surgical procedure.
He can be a mildly destructive, messy attention whore at times, but he's one of the most affable quadrupeds I have ever encountered... and somewhere in his life he learned to socialize with hoomans beautifully.
Nobody in this house gets lonely... the cat sees to it.

People tend to do that, too.
Until they want something from you. Like a hand, a ride, a vote....

In Peggy’s case she should have taken Mama’s advice. Her taste in men was awful.
