‘Avengers: Endgame’ Passes ‘Avatar’ to Become Biggest Movie in History
Variety ^ | June 20, 2019 | Rebecca Rubin

After “Avatar’s” impressive 10-year reign as box office champion, “Avengers: Endgame” has officially dethroned James Cameron’s sci-fi epic to become the biggest movie of all time.

On Saturday, Disney and Marvel’s blockbuster crossed $2.7892 billion at the global box office. Once weekend ticket sales are tallied, the tentpole will exceed the $500,000 needed to surpass “Avatar’s” $2.7897 billion benchmark.

“Avengers: Endgame” has amassed $853 million at the domestic box office, making it the second-highest grossing movie in North America behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million). Internationally, it collected a mighty $1.9 billion, boasting especially strong performances in China ($629 million), the United Kingdom ($114 million), South Korea ($105 million), Brazil ($85 million) and Mexico ($77 million).

Disney, ever determined to reach ultimate box office glory, re-released “Avengers: Endgame” in theaters last month with additional footage in an effort to beat “Avatar.”

Since Disney closed its $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox, “Avatar” is now part of the Disney empire. That means the Buena Vista company is currently home to seven of the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time.

Marvel president Kevin Feige announced the benchmark during the studio’s Comic-Con presentation in San Diego on Saturday.

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to these historic heights,” Alan Horn, Disney co-chairman and chief creative officer, said in a statement. “Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”

“Avengers: Endgame” set numerous box office records since debuting in April. The superhero tentpole holds the title for biggest global opening weekend with $1.2 billion, best domestic launch with $357 million and strongest international bow with $866 million.

“Avengers: Endgame,” the 22nd entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, features an all-star cast including of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man.

James Cameron has held the #1 spot since 1998 (Titanic). Avatar could reclaim the top spot if the movie is rereleased before Avatar 2.

Not adjusted for inflation. So Gone with the Wind (an actually good movie) is still number 1. Avatar and every MCU movie is absolute trash made excessively for Chinese Slave Labor and are forgotten as soon as it leaves the theater.

Have you ever seen them? The Marvel movies are enjoyable, IMO. They were also made in GA, which benefited the economy there.

Gone With the Wind is #1 adjusted for inflation in North America. Not sure how it ranks adjusted for inflation globally.

It’s like 30 movies. I probably seen less than half because my friend always wanted to go. They were fun enough at the start but after a point they just became tedious. If you enjoy them that’s fine but I can’t honestly see how they still do well at this point.

Minimizing captain marvel’s screen time and story saved this picture. If they had eliminated it completely this landmark would have been hit months ago.

Trying to watch Avengers 14 is like trying to watch Rocky 4 or 5 or whatever.

I just do not find biotech sorcery all that interesting.

As Hollywierd has abandoned Morality wholesale, trading shock factor for an ever increasingly jaded audiences, (an inevitable consequence of shock drivel screen plays), they have themselves become so jaded as to no longer have the capacity to write Morality plays.

That is a primary consequence of selling out your spirit to your flesh, it changes you in ways that you can no longer comprehend the higher things in life. You do not in life become a simple collection of all your highest achievements, you become a synthesis of all the things you choose to embrace. Some things open up, others close down.

The bible says this eloquently, sow to wind, reap a whirlwind.

You see this pattern in the “reverse evolution” of music, the current pop and rap vs classical orchestra and part part harmony jazz age.

It is not that technopop and CGI graphics are a step down in media capability, quite the converse. Our capability to innovate in media has grown exponentially. But at the same time our social Morality has degraded exponentially also.

So we have the dichotomy in place of capability vs capacity in comprehension of the “finer things of life”.

Modern society is a nuclear powered cesspool, incapable of writing a plot above feces level.

We have traded love, honor and joy for the eye candy of Babylon in Hollywood and our society.

I tried watching it. Just a bunch of “superheroes” bouncing around and throwing stuff at each other. Absolultey zero plot or character development. Mindless is not my thing.

They were made in Georgia because GA offered big bucks in taxpayer bribes...er, incentives.

I used to enjoy Marvel movies. Haven’t in years, so I haven’t seen the last few.

I was so underwhelmed by this Avengers installment, I had to leave the theater/drive-in. What overblown bulls**t.

I love people, like you, who pontificate and denigrate modern society.

I bet you shout at the clouds when it rains also.

Life is not about controlling everything, but how you deal with what has been dealt to you.

You might learn that in these Marvel comics....the characters were created in the 1950s and 1960s by decent men who tried to teach that with great power comes great responsibility.

I love how some FReepers are triggered by superhero movies.

They react no better than liberal when Trump tweets.

What snowflakes.

I read a lot of Marvel comics as a kid. I eventually got tired of the constant Marvel movies, and stopped watching after Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Endgame was such a talked about movie that my wife and I decided to play catch-up and see what we had missed. We watched all the ones we had missed on Blu-ray or digital copies and then went to see Endgame in a theater. I'm glad we did. While I did not love every film in the series, it was an over-all impressive achievement. The groundwork for what became the Infinity War storyline was laid quite a few movies ago. The final ending with Engame was intense and rather moving (aside from the gratuitous scene of the guy talking about his boyfriend).

All in all, it was an impressive achievement. It would have been impossible to do in the pre-CGI age.

You seem bitter. What is more impressive than just Endgame is the fact that every MCU movie is a huge blockbuster, about 2 dozen, not to mention Daredevil on Netflix, etc. They are a lot of fun to watch. They are not meant to be anything more than that.

Just settle in and get used to it. Marvel mentioned their new slate of movies to be released in 2020 and 2021 and the movies they will make for the new Disney stream service.

“Just a bunch of “superheroes” bouncing around and throwing stuff at each other. Absolultey zero plot or character development”

exactly like every other super-duper-comicbook-hero CGIed movie for the last 10 years ... if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all ...

I see you missed my point, indicated by the fact I agree with you. The originals were all morality plays, the modern knock offs are ignoring the depth of the original characters, and the flavors of their struggles with their personal weaknesses; batman’s and superman’s loss of parential figures for moral value, spiderman’s terminal nerdiness, green lanterns struggle of extreme power vs his inferiority complex. Classic coming of age morality plays.

Now instead of the mainstay, humility, and the struggle to develp good character,we end up having an egomaniacal cat fight in wide screen.

Is it a coincidental that the 50s Judeao Christian mindset being given over to the 60s free sex and if it feels good do it shift in Hollywood were the flavors of the day?
