A small glass of juice or soda a day is linked to increased risk of cancer, study finds

There's more bad news for fans of sugary drinks such as soda and fruit juice.

A new study has linked drinking just a small glass of a sugary drink per day -- 100 ml, about a third of a typical can of soda -- to an 18% increase in overall cancer risk and a 22% increase in risk for breast cancer.

The research, which looked at more than 100,000 French adults, links consumption of sugary drinks to an increased risk of some cancers. This follows a recent study linking sugary beverage consumption to greater risk of premature death.

"The results indicate statistically significant correlations between the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks and risk of all cancers combined, and of breast cancer," said Ian Johnson, nutrition researcher and emeritus fellow, Quadram Institute Bioscience, who wasn't involved in the research.

"Surprisingly perhaps, the increased risk of cancer in heavier consumers of sugary drinks was observed even among consumers of pure fruit juice -- this warrants more research," Johnson told the Science Media Centre in the UK.

Mathilde Touvier, lead author of the study which was published Wednesday in medical journal BMJ, said that the findings added to research showing that reducing how many sweetened beverages we drink would be beneficial for our health.

"What we observed was that the main driver of the association seems to be really the sugar contained in these sugary drinks," said Touvier, who is the research director of the Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team of the National Health and Medical Research Institute at the Paris 13 University.

Touvier said her team observed that sugar seemed to be the main driver of the link.

"High sugary drinks consumption is a risk factor for obesity and weight gain," she said, and, "obesity is in itself a risk factor for cancer."

Exactly! Everything you stated is worth repeating..
What they are saying, and it’s been a suggested health discussion for a decade...is that cancer growths are often looking for something to stimulate and assist in growing, and sugar is an active item. So folks who are consuming a six-pack of soda per day, along with a chocolate cake slice, a pile of pancakes each morning, and a apple turnover for the mid-morning....are actively helping that cancer growth cycle. Maybe you got great genes and they counter-attack, and lessen your cancer potential. Maybe you got lousy genes and simply accelerating your potential for cancer. It’s your luck. The hint here by the research crowd....lessen your sugar intake. Maybe one or two sodas a week are all you need, and you learn to make it with ice tea (no sugar). Maybe you curtail the chocolate cake except once a week. Maybe you increase your fruit intake by triple what you do now...for snacks.

"High sugary drinks consumption is a risk factor for obesity and weight gain," she said, and, "obesity is in itself a risk factor for cancer."

so, is it the sugar or the obesity that is linked to the cancer. What I mean is, does a person who consumes sugary drinks but manages the rest of his diet to stay fit also at a higher risk for cancer? 90% of the time I drink water or coffee but I do see myself drinking a bit more diet pop these last couple of years than i used to.

Dr. Melik: This morning, for breakfast he (Miles Monroe) requested something called…wheat germ, organic honey and Tiger’s Milk.

Dr. Aragon: Oh yes. Those are the charmed substances that some years ago were thought to contain life-preserving properties.

Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? No steak or cream pies or… hot fudge?

Dr. Aragon: Those were thought to be unhealthy. Precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true.

Dr. Melik: Incredible.
Funny how the hippie-fied “health” trends keep recycling themselves.

My step son was on some sort of environmental health rant a few years ago. I sent him to the Dihydrogen Monoxide website to warn him of the dangers. A few days later he sent me an e-mail telling me how vile I was to pull his leg like that. I like your warning placards.

We don’t drink soda or fruit juice. Better to eat the fruit.

a lot of these “studies” aren’t even real studies. They take data from lots of other studies, all taken under different conditions with different populations and different rules, and merge them into a combined data set and then start hunting for anything that indicates possibility of a slight correlation. Using this study of studies they may find that 29 year old read heads with size 12 feet have higher rates of acne but they’ll discard that as silly. Then they find that people who have pizza once a month correlate with people who develop lung cancer and THAT is headline worthy. “Regular pizza consumption linked to lung cancer!” Until the next study of studies shows the reverse and we can all eat pizza again.

I will worry when I see warning labels on oranges which state that oranges are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects.

I have had a glass or two of orange juice every single day of my adult life. Still hanging in there. Of course I am only 67 so there is still time to die.

Also, during the summer heat I always drink a glass of OJ with a couple of potassium tablets before I go out on my bike, so now I am really doomed.

Oh, and the clincher, I have a couple of cups of tea every day with a teaspoon of sugar in each.

I’ll be lucky if I wake up in the morning..........

For the Orange...don't forget to eat the white stuff under the orange skin...loaded with flavinoids.

As for orange juice...look at the label and see how much sugar is in it.

If you can get at least 1000 people whose diet is exactly the same in every way except for the juice/soda, then you can do a study.

Problem is, they didn’t find 1000 people with the exact same diet. They “controlled” for the differences, so they say. No they didn’t, so the study is useless.

If it’s the sugar, then they could have done this for putting sugar in the coffee, or sugar on cereal!

Enough with the stupid studies.
