Yes, there seem to be many missing pieces here. The poor child. I do not think a 2-year-old could get into an SUV without help.

Yeah. That’s what makes me pause. Two yr olds can wander at night and more than one has gotten out of the house. But usually they are found walking around the neighborhood, not in a car.
Also, people generally lock their cars when on a lot overnight. How did the kid get in?
Sad story, but yes, there are missing pieces.

That's because they cannot. This poor child was murdered. I have zero doubt about that. Too many missing pieces here and I wouldn't be surprised to learn in the next week or two that a family member did it.
That's what the FBI's own crime stats bear out in cases like this.
Do you think a 2 year old could open the door of a SUV?
That was my first thought, but then I remembered my daughter at 2 yrs. old would climb on top of the refrigerator. Then one time when my husband was on the roof fixing the antenna she climbed up there. That girl was a regular monkey.
Some parents are too lazy to try to put the little one down for a nap especially if the child is fussy. But they know that the kid falls asleep when they drive around, so they load them up and drive until the kid nods off. Then they go home and leave them in the car so they can get a good nap.
Thats my first thought.
... and close the door. I, agree.
