With growing concerns over online privacy and securing personal data, more people than ever are considering alternatives to Google products. After all, Googles business model essentially revolves around data collection and advertisements, both of which infringe on your privacy. More data means better (targeted) ads and more revenue. The company pulled in over $116 billion in ad revenue last year alone and that number continues to grow.
A growing number of people are seeking alternatives to Google products that respect their privacy and data. This guide aims to be the most exhaustive resource available for documenting alternatives to Google product. So lets get started (in no particular order or preference)...
StartPage StartPage gives you Google search results, but without the tracking (based in the Netherlands).
Searx A privacy-friendly and versatile metasearch engine thats also open source.
MetaGer An open source metasearch engine with good features, based in Germany.
SwissCows A zero-tracking private search engine based in Switzerland, hosted on secure Swiss infrastructure.
Qwant A private search engine based in France.
DuckDuckGo A private search engine based in the US.
Mojeek The only true search engine (rather than metasearch engine) that has its own crawler and index (based in the UK).
YaCy A decentralized, open source, peer-to-peer search engine.
Givero Based in Denmark, Givero offers more privacy than Google and combines search with charitable donations.
Ecosia Ecosia is based in Germany and donates a part of revenues to planting trees.
Note: With the exception of Mojeek, all of the private search engines above are technically metasearch engines, since they source their results from other search engines, such as Bing and Google.

Takes a long time to scour every web page these days. Google and Bing got in early when there weren’t so many websites and they’ve been managing to keep up with the growth but starting out fresh would be an enormous task.
They have to scan regularly and develop algorithms continually.
Google is the biggest online ad system also which gives them and edge because to get good placement in search results, you have to pay google for ads and they’re own keyword research that they’ve been doing over the years. Then there’s google analytics to see how well your search words are doing.
They cornered the market for all things website related really.

I have used Dogpile.com searching for images. Works fairly well - better than DDG, though I use DDG for all other searches. Within the last 3 months Dogpile.com added the nuisance “robot checker” and the nuisance “check which images contain a ”
Of course not. Use any software that gets the job done for you.
Personally, I appreciate Duckduckgo's attitude about not tracking it's users. For general web surfing, Ghostery does an excellent job of blocking trackers.
Good timing. I was just thinking and exploring a divorce from Google.
It’s time.
My desktop uses Ask.com as default search engine. Unfortunately, it is not available on tablets or phones.

That makes Google the best for people wanting to put something in front of me to sell me something. It makes them suck the most at searching for what I want to find.
I echo your complaint. Searches of ten years ago were much more competent. Wayback is of little help unless you know specifically what you want to recover.

Hmm. I wonder how many of these brands have secret deals with Google to share data with them.
I’m pretty sure Mozilla shares its browser data with Google.
SEC: corporate malfeasance.
FTC: consumer fraud.
One does not need to invoke anti-trust. There are existing regulations governing publicly-traded corporations (not private companies) that abuse their power.
We already have the regulations. What we do not have is representation that will enforce them.
Being in the private sector does not equal being a private company. (IPO = Initial PUBLIC Offering.)
And they take money from companies for ads, then undermine them in searches if they do not toe the leftist line: corporate malfeasance, consumer fraud.
Thanks to upchuck for the ping! And a callout to ShadowAce, too!
Cool.
Going to start test driving StartPage.

Thanks for this reference!
You’re welcome. Glad you find it useful.
Google and Facebook are natural monopolies. The more people use them, the more useful they are.
