You cannot be 'too clean' health experts warn, in bid to debunk myths

You cannot be "too clean", millennials are being told, as public health experts attempt to debunk myths around hygiene. The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) said incorrect theories which became popular in the 1990s were fuelling confusion and unhygienic habits among subsequent generations.

And they called for lessons on cleanliness to be included in the national curriculum

The warning comes after organisers of Glastonbury urged festival goers to opt for “strip washes” with a flannel and soap, instead of a shower, in order to help the environment.

The “hygiene hypothesis” which became widely publicised in the 1990s argued that rising rates of allergies were being caused by "overcleanliness," suggesting children should be exposed to a wide range of potentially harmful microbes.

But experts from the Royal Society today stressed this is not the case.

They said people need diverse exposure to microbes that are mostly harmless - such as those children can find playing outdoors - but should remain vigilent about hygiene in the home.

The research found that one in six men thought there was low or no risk associated with not washing their hands after using the toilet, while one in 12 saw no need to wash their hands after handling raw meat. Around half as many women had such views.

Experts called for more “targeted hygiene” in the home, in particular cleaning surfaces, utensils and hands thoroughly during and after food preparation, and putting bedding and towels on a 60C wash. Such simple measures can cut down the risk of spreading serious infections such as listeria, e. coli or norovirus, they said.

People should also wash hands with soap and water before eating with fingers, after using the toilet, after coughing, sneezing and blowing noses and after handling and laundering dirty clothing and household linens.

I keep my water heater at 125deg.

That’s a hot wash.

Of course my linens and towels get bleach. As do undies.

Hmmm. I wash my hands after using the bathroom, before/after food prep and eating with my fingers, wash kitchen surfaces and utensils before and after use, wash linens at 125, and I always scrub thoroughly before I start eating with my hands. So according to this article I’m about 50% liberal.

Sorry about that. I guess in this I do lean left. :/

Try telling a farmhouse mother that her kids do not need to wash their hands so often and that her kitchen is too clean! Most would laugh at the "hygiene hypothesis."

These are Brits working for their great National Health Scam.

When more people infect more people with dangerous and often deadly diseases, many of those infected will die.

That means less people needing their great Nation Health Scam.

Laz... We are so screwed

My last girl pal had been married 9 times and that bait had been cast... Many Times.

Wonder how many pages it would take to show my combined score adding a cheating EX of 25 years? I do believe I would be Taxing Googles Super Computers if all of my 50 years of Sexual activity and partners were somehow fed into that particular matrix.

I use only cold water for my clothes, except once in a while I'll do a hot wash for whites just to brighten them up a bit....

I hang my clothes outside when I can, and I think the sunlight and air probably are better at disinfecting then other things.

I often start eating my unwashed fruit or veggies on the way home from the store..

I have not died yet, at least nobody has told me I have....

Sometimes you have to disinfect everything and everyone.

Infectious disease is now comparatively rare in the developed world. That's not due to fancy, high tech science, it's due to clean water supplies, sanitary sewage disposal and personal hygiene.

Ask a medical professional or missionary with experience in the third world where these basics are not available about the scary stuff they have seen.

This nonsense isn't surprising coming from the same people who saved malaria from extinction by banning DDT.

Sorry, the way I put it makes it sound like I have it exactly backwards. But that's not really true. The RSPH is combating the idea that hygenic practices in Western civilization are being overdone, and are even downright dangerous. If such notions were only being advanced by those who don't know any better (e.g., some parents), they could easily be refuted at the secondary level, but aren't being.

Yeah, I know. And it’s resistant because of the uber-tidy users of hand sanitizers and and other anti-bacterial products.

These are the same “health experts” who are clueless to explain the worsening collective health of industrialized nations, in particular the U.S.

I’m not commenting further.

I was referring to the idiotic theories that became popular in the 90s that claimed hygiene was actually dangerous for those who practised it.

Someone should tell the millunatics that it is also okay to not smell too bad.   (Maybe you can share this "natural" deodorant with them, if you catch a strong whiff of them...)
