Wildlife officials say they were forced to euthanize a friendly young black bear after it grew too familiar with people who regularly fed and took selfies with it.
Since the beginning of June, Oregon police received regular calls about the bear, which was usually spotted near its favorite boat ramp at an Oregon park.
On Thursday, they found the animal surrounded by a pile of trail mix and sunflower seeds that appeared to have been left behind intentionally by some passersby. The police concluded the bear had grown too habituated to human interaction, and could pose a threat to people's safety, so they made the difficult decision to shoot and kill it.

Probably not surviving is a better outcome that being euthanized.

Ya think? Being put down? Or probably starving to death in the wild?
Option B sounds like the right call. And yeah. The bear would return. As a mean and hungry adult bear.
“...so they made the difficult decision to shoot and kill it...”
Well, little friendly bears are sort of like friendly dogs. Why not kill it?
Think if it was a female and eventually had cubs. That would be extremely dangerous.
agree
Probably not a lot of demand for common black bears in zoos. Everyone wants to see the grizzlies or polar bears.
Therapy bear.
I agree. I’m damn tired of these narcissistic bears with their instagram accounts lording it over the rest of the wildlife calling themselves “social media influencers”. It’s got to stop.
Therapy bear.
A zoo OR there are wildlife habitats all over the country where he could have been cared for!!!!
“Isn’t it a pity.
Isn’t it a crime!”
Wisconsin did that for a bear that had developed a love for baseball (hot dogs?) and started bringing her cubs to the games. (I never heard an update on her.)
It would either not survive, or come back to where it was taken from.
The saying, in circles that know, is “A fed bear is a dead bear”.
Bears Want to Kill You, the authoritative guide to bears.
Available now.
There are far more black bears available than there are spaces available in zoos.
Cubs are routinely euthanized because there is no one who is will to pay to keep and feed them.
There is a large surplus population of black bears in the United States.
The bears do there part to keep it in check. Black bears are routine cannibals who will kill and eat smaller black bears. Mature boars routinely kill and eat all the cubs they can catch.
Its surprising how fast even lower intelligence animals learn that humans can provide food. There is a creek in an urban park nearby where egrets have made a small rookery. The bird spends part of each day just standing on the east end of the fishing area. If you pay it a fish, nearly any creek fish will do, it holds still for you. You can do just about about anything near it eccept touch it and it just waits. Lots of selfie takers with that bird.
Well for one it is expensive to keep in a zoo.
2 there is no shortage of black bears.
Not worth the time or effort to do so.
Sad story, but probably necessary.
Or they could have been aborted. Then we could see how liberals heads would explode.
And Harambe weeps wearing a tee shirt that reads “#BlackBearLivesMatter”.
