A 16-year-old from Gary was shot and killed Thursday while attempting to sell his Xbox.
The teen, identified as Johnny Peluyera, was with his father when they met up with two men near 51st and Maryland streets to sell the teen’s Xbox. They arranged the meeting using an online sales app.
The boy’s father said he knew something wasn’t quite right. He spotted a gun and tried to warn his son, but the teen was shot in the back as he tried to run back to his father’s car.

Most of the media coverage of this describe the suspects "late teens or 20s". This article at least points out that the suspects are black.

I would never try to sell something via one of theose "Craig's List" type apps. I would have sold it on ebay, so as to not have to meet the buyers perps.
In my college days, I lived three blocks from that site, right on Maryland Avenue. It was a dump then, and only a block of east of Cottage Grove Avenue (an important dividing line).
I rarely felt in danger outside of an unwise visit to Mr. Submarine at 51st and Cottage Grove at 4:00AM. Sounds like a marginal neighborhood has gotten worse.

Boy that’s sad. I can’t imagine how the father is feeling. And the mother too. Recriminations and guilt seem unavoidable whether justified or not.
What is the value of a used Xbox? $50 or $100? That’s more than the value of human life to such jagoffs.

I think if people like “dogs”. That is, most of us are dogs, but there are coyotes and wolves among us. They may look like dogs, but they simply see you as dinner. It’s why I carry in my car. When I come across a Coyote or Wolf I will not hesitate to use it when necessary. They are simply not like us.

This is why - when selling things via Craigslist, etc. - it’s always best to do the meetup with unknown people at a safe public location. Like in front of a police station or something like that.
Otherwise things can go down like a random drug deal with some Columbians.

I like your analogy. I carry all the time. I don't know why the father in this story was not carrying. Also, if I found out I was meeting a guy named Trayvon or De'fonte, I would have called the deal off.
I have a 16yr old who finished finals Thursday and is not set to be a junior.

Jesus! I ended up in Gary Indiana with my Mom who is no shrinking violet, and that place scared the hell out of me!
