The new plan to remove a trillion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere: Bury it
Washington Post ^ | June 12, 2019 | Laura Reileyat

Posted on 06/13/2019 7:30:05 AM PDT by EdnaMode

Last month, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere surpassed 415 parts per million, the highest in human history. Environmental experts say the world is increasingly on a path toward a climate crisis.

The most prominent efforts to prevent that crisis involve reducing carbon emissions. But another idea is also starting to gain traction — sucking all that carbon out of the atmosphere and storing it underground.

It sounds like an idea plucked from science fiction, but the reality is that trees and plants already do it, breathing carbon dioxide and then depositing it via roots and decay into the soil. That’s why consumers and companies often “offset” their carbon emissions by planting carbon-sucking trees elsewhere in the world.

But an upstart company, Boston-based Indigo AG, now wants to transform farming practices so that agriculture becomes quite the opposite of what it is today — a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

By promoting techniques that increase the potential of agricultural land to suck in carbon, the backers of Indigo AG believe they can set the foundation for a major effort to stem climate change. On Wednesday, the company announced a new initiative with the ambitious goal of removing 1 trillion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by paying farmers to modify their practices.

Called the Terraton Initiative (a “teraton” is a trillion tons), the company forecasts that the initiative will sign up 3,000 farmers globally with more than 1 million acres in 2019.

The joke of this is, many farmers are already doing the things these people claim will cure the "climate crisis".

- Cover crops
- Crop Rotation with animal use
- No till drilling

We already do this because we get better yields.
Not everyone of course - a lot of industrial farms don't ("Big Ag") but even they are coming around.

None of this has anything to do with "climate change".
This organization is co-opting current sustainable practices for their own tax money grab from a clueless government.

Plants and animals have a symbiotic relationship.

Each produces something that the other needs to survive.

Interrupt that relationship, and they BOTH DIE..............

Mucking with the carbon cycle is not something that should be taken lightly... However, nothing different than what happens with permafrost or other things... Carbon in the decay/matter just gets locked up for thousands of years, until the ground warms eventually and it gets released again...

Trees do lock up carbon, but the bulk of that is done during their rapidly growing phase.. once they slow down growth the carbon absorption drops off significantly.

What will removing a trillion tons of the essential plant nutrient CO2 from the ecosphere do to the environment?

It’s like some sci fi books I read as a kid. Earth is taken over by aliens that promptly begin terraforming the planet to suit their own environmental needs.

Are there aliens that are CO2 intolerant or something?

How much energy is needed for this harebrained scheme? Is that energy polluting?

Plant trees instead and ban slash and burn farming.

Foolishness

The planet is suffering from an EPOCH level drought of CO2!

If they are then they don't have Coke or Pepsi on their home planet..............

Or, they could just wait a few more years and as the planet cools, due to increased cloud cover as a result of decreased solar activity, the oceans will reabsorb the excess CO2.

This is why I have never understood the supposed environmental reasons for recycling paper. Paper is not made from old growth forests. It is made from trees that are planted as a crop. The more paper that is consumed the more trees that are planted and the more carbon that is removed from the atmosphere and converted to paper.

If you bury used paper in landfills all of that carbon is removed from the atmosphere. If you recycle paper, less trees are planted and less carbon is removed from the atmosphere.

Energy will be needed to do this, and it goes without saying that the energy should not be fossil fuel based. I suggest that the only energy with the efficiency to do this is nuclear. They won’t like it and will make more movies about those bad industrial people who will profit, but it will do what is necessary.

And what is necessary, although the article does not say, is to use the additional electric power to switch transportation to electric vehicles and rail and also desalinate enough water to restore plant life in our desert regions. This will allow capitalism to deliver what socialism promises. And as a bonus, power may eventually be so cheap that we can suck Carbon out of the atmosphere, although we might also have to make it available to grow plants in the desert because plants do need this trace element.

We simply MUST get get all that plant food out of the atmosphere before the current solar minimum brings down the temperatures and moves the agriculture of the world south and shortens growing seasons. It will help the great goal of world population reduction.

I think that creates Dioxin...

“Lib speak, farmers are too good at feeding the world, we have to curtail their prolific harvests so people starve.”

AOC also wants to “take a look at factory farming.” Be afraid, very afraid any time a “democratic socialist” or communist wants to “take a look at” American farming. All that can happen is destruction of the world’s greatest agricultural system, mass poverty, and mass starvation. Anyone who doesn’t believe that only needs to look at what the communists did in Russia, China,
Cuba, Zimbabwe, and, now, Venezuela.

Burying air. That’s some real smarts there. Might as well drain the oceans and do a complete deforestation of the planet and euthanize all the animals.

Leftists come up with these wacky causes but they never step to the front of the line to stop exhaling carbon dioxide.
