New Austin camp encourages girls to consider construction careers

Thirteen middle-school-age girls are spending the week learning valuable skills as a precursor to possible careers in the construction industry.

The group will build and wire their own lamps, pour concrete and build a free library stand over the course of the week in a bid from the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) to recruit more girls into the industry early.

"There's just not a lot of talk about what opportunities are out there, and that's kind of our goal is to show the kids what else there could be," said Jordan Moore, a specialist at plumbing supplier Ferguson Enterprises and board member at NAWIC's Austin chapter.

Moore started in the industry when she decided she'd rather start her career than stay in college. She became a plumber's apprentice, going to clients' houses and working with her hands. "It was very satisfying work," she said, once she got past the initial double-take.

They are going to have to compete with all the illegal aliens who do the work for minimum wage or less under the table. They’d fair better if they went to trade school to learn how to flip burgers.

50 lbs?

Bag of cement = 1 cubic foot, weighs 94 lbs.

Of course there are smaller bags at the big box stores for DIYers.

At my age and with my back problems, I buy it in the gallon size zip lock bags. ;>)

I watched a huge building go up from day one over the past few years. The most intriguing job was the crane operator. He had to climb way up into the sky every morning, and it didn’t seem that he ever came down until end of day.

He was alone, though I assumed in radio contact; and I guessed he had to pee in a bottle and bring his lunch every day. To top it off, he was right in the takeoff path of a nearby small airport.

I think a woman could probably do the actual job as well as a man; but i doubt that many women would be happy with the working conditions.

I looked up what those guys earn in my area, and it didn’t seem nearly enough, to me.

I’ve employed on job sites women in about every trade.

BS. I worked many a construction job and the only gals were the ones serving lunch.

Things like that 500 MCM shown earlier are a;most alway pulled by tugs anymore. However, that is not to say there isn’t back breaking work involved in a big secondary pull.

Give me a break. I know how gals can make money on a construction site but it doesn’t involve working in the normal sense of the word.

Having been involved with remodeling theater work in NYC, Nederlander theaters and Brooklyn Academy of Music, that vision was right on the mark...and a roll of duct tape hanging from their belts.

Women having kids with a dozen different men is a huge problem, as well. No fault divorce needs to be gone, makes walking away from marriage too easy. Too many single mothers who are either working or catting around looking for their next baby daddy instead of staying home and raising the kids they have.

Stepping down from soapbox now.

I worked, ran or contracted for large commercial construction from 1965 to 2015. Been on projects from 500 Million on down. I have not had a woman on every project by any means but my statement is absolutely true.

Much of my work the last 20 years was on Federal projects where percentages of women in the workforce is measured and accounted for on Federal projects.

Sounds like you are doing great with her. She is about old enough to mow the lawn, if she’s big enough to push the mower.

*** Yeah, every girl dreams of toting 50 pound sacks of cement and a tool belt................ ***

I worked roofing, painting, wallpapering and at a cabinet shop. One of the builders I worked for would put me in charge of the crews if he had to leave.
