Thirteen middle-school-age girls are spending the week learning valuable skills as a precursor to possible careers in the construction industry.
The group will build and wire their own lamps, pour concrete and build a free library stand over the course of the week in a bid from the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) to recruit more girls into the industry early.
"There's just not a lot of talk about what opportunities are out there, and that's kind of our goal is to show the kids what else there could be," said Jordan Moore, a specialist at plumbing supplier Ferguson Enterprises and board member at NAWIC's Austin chapter.
Moore started in the industry when she decided she'd rather start her career than stay in college. She became a plumber's apprentice, going to clients' houses and working with her hands. "It was very satisfying work," she said, once she got past the initial double-take.

I agree with you 100% on that.
My sister was a project manager for a construction company. She was always on site working with the contractors and subs. Unfortunately she was bitten by a moose and had to find another job.
It reminds me of how many lesbians do props, tech and set building in theaters in NYC. One of the biggest laughs I heard in a B’way theater was in “The Producers” when a large lesbo walked out with a hammer in one hand and a set of huge keys on her hip.

Id like to get hat on the hood of the 48...
Awesome!
I recently had some work done at the local Jiffy Lube and all the staff were women. Awesome!
LOL!.................
I enjoy working with women when it comes to cars and doctors but in my personal opinion, women need to be home taking care of their kids. One of the reason people are so screwed up these days is because they are being raised in daycare.
In some societies, she’s a keeper!...............
Every woman needs to be able to earn her own living.
Or heavy packets of shingles up a ladder to a rooftop with the temp at 105, sit on the roof all day and hammer shingles. Various other construction jobs should appeal to them as well.
Not sure I’d call anyone dumb enough to get cement implants a ‘keeper’...
They only do that while the camera is rolling.
You’re in the wrong ‘society’...................B^)
And they’ll want the same salary as those men who work high up on buildings being constructed and walk on girders. Without ever going up them, of course.
They just built a new subdivision across the street from my house.
Apparently there’s a machine that they use to lift entire pallets of shingles................
I remember those days as a young electrician’s helper. Had to use lots of lube as I recall.
There are two kinds of trades. One of them is heavy trades, involving danger, heavy lifting, extreme weather, and in the end major joint and back damage. Not a world for girls.
Sacks of cement are 80-90 lbs. I used to whip them around without thinking about it in my 20’s. These days I think about it.
Even better!.............
