US defends itself after humiliating Thailand at Women's World Cup

Thailand's players were in tears at the full-time whistle after suffering the heaviest defeat in World Cup history at the hands of the US.

There were those on social media who criticized the defending champions for celebrating each goal, but Alex Morgan -- who became only the second American to score five in a World Cup match -- told reporters that "every goal counts."

With the US 3-0 up by halftime, the match was effectively over. With the title holders then proceeding to score four goals in the space of six minutes early after the break, it was a rout by the 56th minute.

But Ellis proceeded to make attacking substitutions, bringing on forwards Mallory Pugh, Carli Lloyd and Christen Press, decisions she defended after the match.

The Thai team is supported by a wealthy patron, the general manager Nualphan Lamsam, who is the chief executive of one of the country's largest insurance companies.

Her family's company sponsors Thailand's fledgling women's league, and players on the national team are also employed by her company.

I can give Morgan a pass. She for the most part was calm late in the game.

Now America hating Megan Rapinoe is another story. She led the embarrassing behavior, even celebrating with sliding leg kicks in front the team bench when the score was like 9-0.

I once played on a youth soccer team that had the humiliating distinction of being one of the worst soccer teams that ever existed. We went 0-12 that season, and lost our games by an average score of about 5-0. I think we scored a total of 5 goals all season long. One of our losses was by a 12-0 score to the best team in the league. That was despite a merciful change that was made at halftime -- where the other team let two of their best players play for us for the entire second half after we were already losing 11-0.

Our leagues were organized in two-year age brackets. That was my first year in the 11-12 age group. When I came back at the age of 12, about half the players from the prior season had moved on. We got a new bunch of 11 year-old kids who turned out to be some of the best players I've ever seen. Actually, they were more than that. They included some of the best players ANYONE had ever seen. Three of them went on to become All-State soccer players in high school, and one of them later played on the U.S. national team in the World Cup.

As a 12 year-old, I had the privilege of playing on a championship team that went 12-0 and thrashed every opponent the same way we had gotten our @sses kicked the prior season.

Go figure. Utter humiliation actually made me appreciate winning even more.

Again goal differential is a tie breaker, the other teams in the US Group may very well beat up on Thailand as well, so the rules in place dictate you have to try to score as many goals as possible, it keeps the game interesting even when the result is no longer in doubt.

And again, substitutions in soccer are limited, so you can’t just bring in a bunch of backups.

Now, if this was an elimination round match, where goal differential didn’t matter, then I would see your point.

This knee taking dyke who seems to be front and center in all discussions on this sport (not a fan of soccer) has convinced me to not give a $h!t about this championship

Yes, I understand that, but celebrating each goal is NOT.

It’s not the continued goal scoring, its the unnecessary celebrating and ‘in your face’ behavior after each goal.

That kind of behavior only pisses-off your next opponent too. You don’t want to give them extra motivation.

Good sportsmanship is a win-win for everyone.

“Isn’t ANYONE teaching good sportsmanship anymore????”

The U.S. Women were in a non-winnable PR situation. When my daughters were playing club basketball occasionally, usually in a tournament when a team was playing up, we would be bracketed against a team that should not have been there. And, my girls team being very good would basically have the game won by the get-go. And, there would be different reactions by the opposing coaches. Some would prefer to just let both sides play. Some would request we play the bench. Some would request that we make three passes before shooting, some would ask that our defense stay behind half court so the other team could get the ball in play. All sorts of stuff. The real problem though was the opposing team was not prepared to play “up” and should not have been allowed to do so as it wasn’t fair to the superior team. Such was the case with the Thai team yesterday. How it ever qualified for the Cup is beyond me. Thirty two teams qualified for the Cup. Makes me wonder if that’s too many. Apparently, women’s world wide soccer talent is not very deep. There are probably several hundred elite soccer teams here in the U.S. that could beat that Thai team.

Imagine the hue and outcry had an American opponent humiliated us, as we did to the Thais.

I guess there aren't many good teams in the Asian region, which is comprised mostly of Muslim countries, where they probably don't even have women's teams.

Venezuela did the Men's team, the other night, and Venezuela is the worst team in South America.

"Why is women’s soccer being shoved in our faces?"

I will compromise here. I will let the player of my choice be shoved in my face. It's the least I can do.

The US team just made a lot of enemies ... hope one of the other teams teaches them the lesson they so richly deserve.

The ties in the bracket go to the team with the highest score differential. There is no “mercy rule”. You should, and indeed must, run up the score. I get that real football is not a thing in the USA, but at least learn the rules before commenting.

I'll accept that. However, it doesn't mean you have to celebrate like jackasses and rub it in the face of an obviously inferior opponent. They showed no class and demonstrated poor sportsmanship. It makes almost everyone want to see them lose - Schadenfreude.

What is a "woman's Soccer"?

Did they all get their Participation Trophy? Did any have a penis?

So many unanswered questions.

The only problem is the gamblings lines that may or not have been set. This is why Hockey, soccer, and lesser known sports have while blowouts when a team just pummels the other team into humiliation. There’ve been stories of winning players being murdered over it.

No mention if this was a U.S women team populated by men because they thought themselves as women.

Crying? There’s no crying in volleyball.
