Severed Head of a Giant 40,000-Year-Old Wolf Discovered in Russia

Last summer, a Russian man was strolling along the shore of the local Tirekhtyakh River in Yakutia when he came upon a grisly sight: the severed head of an ancient wolf. The head had been well preserved by the permafrost and still sported a full head of hair and sharp fangs.

The man, Pavel Efimov, handed the ancient head over to scientists, who dated it to over 40,000 years ago, or the end of the Pleistocene epoch, according to The Siberian Times. Their analysis also revealed that the wolf was fully grown and was between 2 and 4 years old when it died. [Image Gallery: 25 Amazing Ancient Beasts]

If there was ever a title for a Amazon, Hulu or Netflix series, that is it!

Imagine these things and Sabertooth cats roaming the human feed-bin that was the bearing strait land bridge.

I don’t have any idea how they can tell that the wolf lived to be 40,000 years old. Trees have rings. What do wolves have?

“The severed head is 16 inches (40 centimeters) long. That’s about half the size of a modern wolf’s body, which can range from 26 inches (66 cm) to 34 inches (86 cm) long, according to The Siberian Times. “

Really big wolf, I’m guessing a 48 inch body.

Heh, I was curious the other night and watched some of the movie “10,000 B.C.” because I was curious to see how they portrayed Mammoths and Sabertooth Tigers, and the movie was one of those that was so laughably bad that it bordered on being funny!

Needless to say, I ended up just fast forwarding through it to see their portrayals of the fauna, but...not worth the calories even for that!

The wolf could have died of natural causes and then been eaten. The head is the least edible part of a carcass. Perhaps the rest of the wolf was eaten.

Just saw an article on a liver.Massive animal. Give him those large incisors and he could pass as a smilodon.
