Jupiter will get so close to Earth this month its largest moons will be visible with binoculars
cbs ^ | June 5, 2019 / | Danielle Garrand

NASA has a message for space lovers this month: Look up. The largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter, will be clearly visible June 10 — and to see its biggest moons you'll only need to grab a pair of binoculars.

NASA said the gas giant is at its "biggest and brightest this month" and will be visible all night. The planet will reach opposition, the annual occurrence when the Jupiter, Earth and the Sun are arranged in a straight line, with Earth in the center. So, mark your calendars for Monday, as it will be the best time of the year to see it.

Galileo discovered the four moons of Jupiter with a telescope with about 4x magnification and a rather small lens. The trick to seeing the Galilean moons is to be able to hold the binoculars steady. Jupiter will likely be the brightest thing in the night sky except for the moon. It won’t twinkle and it will be a warm white.

From the picture, she does look like the type to have anal problems. But even so, if the medical community was PERMITTED to fully disclose the risks associated with ‘alternative lifestyles’, the rate of people doing that crap would drastically decline.

I simply gave my boys the FACTS involved with what happens to gays medically [in general], and their response was NO THANKS, so if going to that side was ever on their mind, it quickly dissipated when they realized the risk level they would be encountering.

To those posing the question: It will be in the southern sky.

Modify the date/time, enter your own location and don’t bother with registering. Follow the instructions and you’ll find it.

“Be great if they told us where to look. West coast/east coast etc.”

It will rise in the East after sunset and transit the sky to the West. You can’t miss it. I saw it Sunday night at about 0300 and it is brighter than anything else in the night sky.

Saturn will be next to appear and follow the same path but it is not as bright as Jupiter.

If you have a spotting scope or a small telescope on a tripod you will see much more than with binoculars.

Thanks fieldmarshaldj. BTW, a good pair of binoculars (on a stand, for stability), or a low-end telescope, should be more than sufficient to see the four Galilean moons *almost anytime*.
