June 4 (UPI) -- Eating a chicken could raise a person's "bad cholesterol" to similar levels as eating a steak, contradicting long-thought ideas about health differences between the meats, new research suggests.
Researchers found eating white meat poultry may raise low-density lipoprotein levels in the same way as red meat, according to a study published Tuesday in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition. That elevation in bad cholesterol after eating chicken can occur with or without consuming any saturated fat.
"When we planned this study, we expected red meat to have a more adverse effect on blood cholesterol levels than white meat, but we were surprised that this was not the case -- their effects on cholesterol are identical when saturated fat levels are equivalent," Ronald Krauss, director of atherosclerosis research at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute and study senior author, said in a news release.
The Animal and Plant Protein and Cardiovascular Health trial showed eating a heavy diet of red meat or white meat led to higher blood cholesterol levels for the consumer than eating the same amount of plant proteins.
The new findings contradict guidelines from health groups that eating poultry is better for heart health than red meat, suggesting there is less health difference between the two proteins than previously thought. In its dietary guidelines, the federal government promotes eating less red meat and poultry, suggesting people increase the amount of vegetables and other underconsumed food groups they eat.
The researchers say eating proteins from dairy, legumes and vegetables provide the best cholesterol benefit.
"Our results indicate that current advice to restrict red meat and not white meat should not be based only on their effects on blood cholesterol," Krauss said. "Indeed, other effects of red meat consumption could contribute to heart disease, and these effects should be explored in more detail in an effort to improve health."
What a crock! The foodie police have lost all credibility. They have a history of bad calls, including the food pyramid. I will never forgive them for advising all to eat margarine instead of butter!
That it is. But in so being, it is like a 'blank canvas' upon which you can paint a masterpiece palette for your palate..................
Chicken thighs. Chicken. Thighs.
Babyback ribs...............a real SUPERFOOD!................
Or lots of grains!............
So, I'll let it set two weeks in the fridge.................
Another bull$hit study. First it wasnt, then it was. These studies are worth nothing.
Very nice summary of some scientific realities. The amount of noise and magical diets is unbelievable!
changed my diet, now i’m eating 3 eggs a day.
Cholesterol went from borderline to perfect
Bookmarking.
Eat moar fish
Jake!
Basically, proteins and fats are good for you... carbs are bad (at least the levels that American’s eat them).
If you want to lose weight, just drop your carbs to less than 100 a day, ideally less than 50 a day, and if you do nothing else, you will lose weight.
Did you know that when humans began to farm, and started to eat a diet of primarily carbs, instead of proteins and fats, they actually got smaller? The average human became several inches shorter once we started to farm vs being hunter gatherers... not to mention suddenly started to have issues with tooth decay and other things that were not commonly seen in humans prior to the advent of farming.
Once you are on a lower carb diet, after a few days, to maybe a week, you will start to not crave nearly as much food in general. You will find yourself eat a LOT less food, because you won’t be craving it.
Most of your initial weight (like most diets) will be water weight... You will indeed see a LOT of weight come off initially when you start keeping your carbs low, as your body burns up your glycogen stores, this is nearly all water weight.... but it will be significant and rapid. After your body burns your glycogen stores, the rapid weight loss will stop... and you will need to follow your diet, and yes, exercise never hurts, and is a good thing.
If you do decide to “cheat” and have a high carb day... expect to gain a few pounds almost instantly as your body stores those carbs.. but it will drop right back off a day or two after you have gone back onto the low carb diet.
The nonsense about avoiding red meats and fats (other than trans fat, that is indeed a killer) due to cholestorol and other issues is bunk. Its been known for a long time that high amounts of processed sugars (carbs) is the cause of most heart disease, not red meat, or saturated fats. When you intake high amounts of refined sugars, your liver rapidly processes them and shoves bad things into your blood stream, fried foods also are NOT good for your heart, but not because of the saturated fat, but because the oils that most foods are fried in have oxidized, which causes an inflammation response in your arteries etc.
Basically if you grew up like I did in the 70s and 80s the government basically was telling you the absolute WRONG way to eat... and still is to this day.... CARBS (all carbs) should be treated like candy/treats. Yes everyone has different metabolisms, biodiversity is grande, but for most people CARBS should be avoided, you should NOT be eating 300 carbs a day, or whatever it is the FDA recommends you eat. (and most Americans eat FAR more than that a day).
Keep them to 100 or less, and ideally 50 or less.
The Extreme anti carb diets, are not generally great, unless you have a health reason to be that low, complete denial of them (like anything) is almost impossible for anyone to maintain.
The global elites want you eating tree bark.
Fortunately, if we buy the whole chicken, I take the dark meat and my Mrs. takes the white. I tell her that I get more flavor out of warming the cardboard on a pizza box which might have a morsel of cheese, olive or meat stuck to it.
I’ll worry about Cholesterol about the time I start worrying about MMGW.
FAKE Science deserves to be De-funded
Right! How hard do you think the cereal/bread/grain industries are fighting against the pro-fat, pro-protein and anti-high carbs movement? Follow the money . . . easy, pay for new studies such as this one.
Healthy fats don’t raise cholesterol, carbs do!
That’s what cinnamon is................
As do I.. other than a few recipes that call for chicken breast...
I do eat chicken breast.. i buy IQF breasts, that I grill and chop up to us in chicken broccoli alfredo, and other things like that..
but if I am going to eat chicken for chickens sake, its almost always a thigh or leg.
Good the psychotic vegans who want to tell the world what to eat and not to eat, can leave the good chicken, pork, beef and other critters to us.
