An American couple vacationing in the Dominican Republic died of respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, according to officials.
Edward Nathael Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, were found dead Thursday in their hotel room in San Pedro de Macorís, on the southeast coast of the country, according to the Dominican Republic National Police.
They arrived at the hotel on May 25 and were scheduled to depart on Thursday, police said.
Several bottles of medicine used to treat high blood pressure were found in the couple's room, according to authorities.
Their cause of death was determined by autopsies performed at the Regional Institute of Forensic Sciences, police said. Officials are awaiting the toxicology and histopathology results.
The couple was from Prince George's County in Maryland, according to Washington, D.C., ABC affiliate WJLA.

Scuba?
Legionella?
Seems odd.
I saw a picture of the couple on a boat. She struck me as being extremely happy. It was a nice picture of a couple that, as far as I know, were a success story. Of course, one can’t tell too much from a single picture.
He 63, she 49 and they both die, in a hotel, at the same time. See if Forensic Files is interested in this one. They should be.
Decompression sickness is what I first thought.
Respiratory faiure? Pillow? Throttled? As someone said, scuba? Freon leak in the AC?
Was anything missing? Money, jewelry etc?
Hantavirus?
Hopefully, it was one of those 'all-inclusive' resorts.
Yes, it is odd. Perhaps their state of health was compromised for that evening by using recreational drugs or alcohol.
I have a few ongoing conditions, any of which could strike me down at any moment, but I don’t expect them to. Many serious heart and respiratory conditions can be managed for years, barely effective one’s activity routine.
Something was going on that was not routine. Good to know it was not because Hotel Staff harmed them, but the Dominican Republic seems to be getting a lot of negative attention this year. Much of it deserved.
I would pick somewhere else to visit in the Caribbean. DR does not sound too inviting for Americans.
Carbon monoxide?
Is there anywhere in that area that is?
I don’t know why it seems to have changed, but it has.
Each new generation of youths will see the visiting tourists in a different way. For some, envy and resentment override good employment opportunities. “Rasta-Lives-Matter-Mon!”
Oh my!
That was my first thought.
They would know that even before autopsy, and certainly after.
Very odd.
DR has beautiful beaches. Usually, if you stay at an All Inclusive there is no reason to go to the areas that cause the Travel Warning.
