Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer and sweltering heat will have a firm grip on the Southeast through and beyond the extended holiday weekend.
While there will be little rain to aid firefights and to impact holiday festivities, residents will have to take the necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Temperatures will soar into the middle and upper 90s through Memorial Day in Montgomery, Alabama; Atlanta; and Tallahassee and Tampa, Florida.
Highs near or above the century mark will continue to bake Columbia, South Carolina; Augusta and Savannah, Georgia; and Jacksonville, Florida.

Yes, and I was out at 6:00 am watering and weeding. Very nice until around 8:00 am.
The monsoon I remember during first 20 years of my life were NOT windy. It was the much needed heavy rainfall, and ALWAYS cooled the temps by 20-30 degrees. Everything turned green, new vegetation growth occurred, and the farmers became happy. I never saw earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, snowstorms, mudslides, freezing rain, etc in the western India town growing up.
I never saw snow until arriving in Iowa City to study for my master’s degree in engineering. But I was only 20 years old so the occasional -20F temps did not bother me one bit during winter. Just had to buy a good insulated parka with a hood.
Ha, we have some home repair going on this weekend that the dry hot weather is facilitating.
Normal late May weather.
“And that is WHY God invented air conditioning. You think anyone would live in Florida year-around otherwise?”
My family came to Florida in 1840. Bunch of them moved to Miami in 1920. No AC. First AC I ever saw was taking a train trip around 1949. Didn’t miss what we never had.
Im in the Tampa area. Its 94. Im by the pool, as God intended. I dont see the problem.
There were a lot of June bugs.

Last 2-3 summers here in Wisconsin, there has been a dearth of those things. Haven’t used the a/c downstairs at all. Fans are enough at night.
They must need heat and humidity.
Don’t miss them, at all.
Palm Springs had a cold front, got snow on San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with temps in low 60s,...people complaining about having to wear coats.
It’s so hot here in NW FL, not even going outside until after 600 pm. No way. It’s deadly hot.
No rain for over 2 weeks. I am sure that will change when hurricane season starts...
Everyone told me that as I get older, I will appreciate the heat and the humidity! This is NOT SO! Give me snow- all year winter would be great!
Columbia is being typically hot and dry.
We took the 65 Willys around the block to the neighborhood pool. Amazing that no one was there.
Before and after the pool, we spun the venerable Willys around the block.
When I was a tad younger I could go all day in the sun. Nowadays...not as long.
Age does begin to show at some point.
It’s hot, and I like it, love it, like it, love it!!!!!
That is why the Florida population of permanent residents in 1960 was less than five million, and has exploded to more than twenty-one million in 2019. Wasn’t because they had that many babies.
My Accu-rite indor/outdoor temp gauge says it is 101 degrees here in Aiken County, SC. Thanking the Good Lord for air conditioning.
Only 93 degrees now. Sun was directly on my weather station at noon. Now in the shade!
No, you need Bill the Science Guy, Algore and Elon Musk, who’ll move you to the much cooler planter Mars in a Tesla automobile!
