"An insider at the San Francisco psychiatrist association convention gives us a whiff of why they're called 'shrinks'"
Remember the golden era of blogging, around 2005 or so, when blogging was really good? Back then, people who were experts, or else really, really, observant, blogged with photos and told us all about the world around them, observing the absurdities the media was missing. Think of the all-time greats, such as Zombietime, or Tim Blair, or well, you probably have some favorites.
It's not there much anymore, but happily, there are still some instances of this kind of blogging greatness.
He outlines 10 observations about the field - from its absurd addiction to pharmaceutical ads and why that's going on - often, drugs are just repackaged with big markups to benefit Big Pharma. And the post goes into how woke the profession is - more interested in leftwingery....

The APA jumped the shark when it declared sexual deviancy to be normal.
From an unknown source:
Not to be picky
But if you have a dicky
And want to be called Vicky
You are a sicky
From a very known (and hyper smart) source:
Richard Feynman had a hierarchy of the sciences - -
Physics is applied mathematics.
Chemistry is applied physics.
Biology is applied chemistry.
Psychology is a bunch of witch doctors
And the above was the best I could find on that joke of a profession.
There are some Dr. Nefario types who are actually engaged in some science but they are mostly covert and working for governments or monopolistic organizations.
Oh, I thought this would be about getting a whiff of SF’s streets.
This was the first APA convention I missed in 10 years. I have no desire to visit San Fran.
Next year is back in Philadelphia.
I wouldn’t go to San Francisco for a whiff.
The APA Meeting in San Francisco.

you get the idea, please dont make me keep writing these.
Were there really more than twice as many sessions on global warming as on obsessive compulsive disorder? Three times as many on immigration as on ADHD? As best I can count, yes. I dont want to exaggerate this. There was still a lot of really meaty scientific discussion if you sought it out. But overall the balance was pretty striking.
Im reminded of the idea of woke capital, the weird alliance between very rich businesses and progressive signaling. If you want to model the APA, you could do worse than a giant firehose that takes in pharmaceutical company money at one end, and shoots lectures about social justice out the other.
so she’s gonna get an addadictome?
And some Wookie shampoo.
According to my dad who was practicing in those days, the APA did not just declare sexual deviancy to be normal, they were harangued and shouted down at meetings until they gave in. It was not a rational, scientific based decision. They were intimidated into signing on to this hoax.
They’ve been off the rails since the DSM III came out. My experience is purely anecdotal, but most of the shrinks I’ve met are themselves unbalanced and disorganized. The only one I’ve ever genuimely felt comfortable with is my current one. And that’s because he was a cardiologist for the first 30 years of his career.
