Why Do Airports Always Play CNN?
FlyerTalk ^ | 5/23/2019 | FlyerTalk

As Reader’s Digest so astutely observes, CNN is omnipresent in airports. But why? Well, technically, what you’re watching is the CNN Airport Network, not CNN. CNN Airport Network caters its content specifically to people waiting in airports. At present, around 59 airports broadcast the network, and that’s the only place it plays.

While they do play content similar to the content that you’ll find on CNN, you won’t find any news about commercial crashes or content that’s not family-friendly. And, not every airport plays the same content. That’s because CNN Airport Network lets airports request content and broadcast their own.

Why? Because CNN Airport Network has a financial relationship with airports. It pays airports to leave the channel on, and even pays some airports for their TVs and “infrastructure” and the right to use “up to six minutes each hour to promote the airport or local attractions” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. And, while many networks do pay for the right to broadcast (sometimes exclusively) in airports a representative from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International pointed out that, often, CNN Airport Network pays the most.

The fees from the cable and satellite companies (and their subscribers) keep them in business. They don’t care how many people watch, that only affects ad revenue. The cable companies pay them based on the number of hookups.

You said, “I went through a few airports recently, Fox was playing as much as CNN.”

Name the “few airports” please.

I have never seen Fox News channel except at VERY SMALL AIRPORTS (perhaps three, and I am a pilot flying to/from airports all over the East Coast, large and small. I have never seen FoxNews at a large or medium sized airport.

A way to pad there viewer count for advertising dollars.

A couple years ago, my wife, who can't resist anything free, signed up for Wall Street Journal home delivery.

For the next six months, it landed in our driveway in a plastic bag, every day. She wouldn't deign to pick it up, so I had to do it.

She read a few copies of it, then stopped.

I looked forward to the end of the six-month free period, so I could stop having to go out every day and pick the darn thing up.

But guess what? The six-month period ended, but the daily tossed WSJ in my driveway didn't.

Here we are two years later, and it still lands in the driveway every morning. They've sent a few letters asking us to start paying, but we never do. Every day, the plastic-bagged WSJ is in our driveway.

I have a pile of them that's probably about eight cubic feet worth, maybe more.

I can't just put them in the recycle bin, oh no. They won't take them wrapped up in the plastic bag. So if I want to recycle them, I have to remove every one of them from its plastic bag, put the plastic bags in the garbage and put the papers in the recycle bin, then haul the whole thing out to the curb. I just let them pile up instead.

I've got them all tied with bungee cords. There are several big piles of them in the garage.

One reason I keep them is to stand as a silent reminder to my wife so she doesn't sign up for any other free garbage media.

From what I understand; CNN is world wide so they air it worldwide in airports.

Even if they get paid to do it; at this point it’s just the norm. A habit or standard. It can be changed with another service that’s also worldwide but the left has itself so embedded; it would be hard to do even with a well funded service.

At one time CNN wasn’t nearly so biased but now it isn’t called the Commie News Network for nothing. They, MSNBC, and the MSM are all just media propaganda fronts for the left in all its forms.

The TVs in airports literally belong to CNN. They pay for them.

The pay big airports several hundred thousand dollars per year, and furnish and maintain the TV sets.

Here's an exception: the airport in Cody, WY. It was notable, so I took a photo.

Thanks to laptops and smart phones, people don’t watch the TV at the airport much any more anyway.

No one watches that stuff. We all have our phones and wireless. It just funnels taxpayer money to CNN to keep it alive.

Is it part of their ratings?

Do they make money from advertisers?

If not, why do they do it?

I still see it occasionally in Dr’s offices, but mostly that’s HGTV.

CNN Airport airs at 58 airports in North America. Its breakfast and early fringe schedule includes news programming from CNN and HLN, broadcast on a 10-second delay. The network also airs air travelers-designed weather, business and travel segments, as well as entertainment programming from WarnerMedia's entertainment-formatted channels. CNN Airport also airs full-length live NFL games, including playoffs and the Super Bowl; full-length NBA games including playoffs; select full-length games from the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament; and select full-length MLB post-season games.

CNN Airport broadcasts 24/7, with around-the-clock technical and editorial staffing, including three of its own reporters. Because it broadcasts in public waiting areas, CNN Airport is more family friendly than regular CNN. In addition, fonts used on the channel is larger than CNN

For security and safety reasons, the channel will not report on airline crashes or other similar commercial aviation incidents. CNN Airport also screens/blurs out material that is either sexually explicit or portrays graphic violence. Usually the network will fill in these gaps with weather segments.

Most doctor’s offices use to have cnn but no more. Mostly non-politics shows.

What about BBC? Is that any good?

Air Traffic By The Numbers

Every day, the FAA's Air Traffic Organization (ATO) provides service to more
than 43,000 flights and 2.6 million airline passengers across more than 29 million
square miles of airspace.
