Sea levels may rise much faster than previously predicted, swamping coastal cities (tr)

Global sea levels could rise more than two meters (6.6 feet) by the end of this century if emissions continue unchecked, swamping major cities such as New York and Shanghai and displacing up to 187 million people, a new study warns.

The study, which was released Monday, says sea levels may rise much faster than previously estimated due to the accelerating melting of ice sheets in both Greenland and Antarctica.

The international researchers predict that in the worst case scenario under which global temperatures increase by 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100, sea levels could rise by more than two meters (6.6 feet) in the same period -- double the upper limit outlined by the UN climate science panel's last major report.

Such a situation would be "catastrophic," the authors of the study warn.

"It really is pretty grim," lead author Jonathan Bamber, a Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Bristol told CNN. "Two meters is not a good scenario."

Why have them migrate? Better to let them stay there and drown.

OMG! 6.6 feet!? Butt, butt, butt..... that means New York would be/could be/might possibly be under hundreds of feet of water. Okay, am I missing the downside here? Anyone fish near the rigs in the gulf? Sounds like good fish habitat to me.

Apparently none of them realize that the increased volume of water will be largely offset by a decreased volume of ice - and depending on temperature, water is more dense than ice.

But neither is as dense as your average mainstream media hack.

When they start mandatory evacuations of the Cape [Cod] and Martha’s Vineyard, I'll start paying attention. Until then, meh.

Same here. Let's ask Ted what he thinks.....oh, never mind...

My initial reaction was to dismiss it outright since it was NASA, because of their tendency to promote climate change with their data.

I stopped reading anything NOAA produced at least a decade ago. Dry Bulb weather data is about all I look at from them anymore - it’s harder to fudge those numbers even though I wouldn’t put it pass them to prove their point.

"... displacing up to 187 million people, ...

Obviously just a classical example of B.S....

IAC, never in hell will America allow 187 million migrants from coastal areas of communist countries like CA, NJ, NY, CT, MA, ME, and DE into our country just because their butts are wet or they are about to drown...

Start building walls now! Good riddance to all of them, including about 300 CT in-laws of mine...

Look, the seas can’t rise 6 feet by the end of the century until it ponies up on the 6 foot rise it was supposed to produce by the end of the last century and didn’t.

By a 97% consensus the fault for that lies entirely with NASA. lol

Why worry about sea levels in the year 2100 when we are all going to be dead by 2033?
