NBC: Strong Economy a ‘Myth’ to Hungry and Homeless College Students

On Tuesday, NBC’s Today show seized on a highly questionable survey claiming that many college students across the U.S. were being forced to choose between “tuition or food.” Correspondent Jacob Soboroff even went so far as to claim that “The strong U.S. economy is a myth to many American college students.”

“Eating or education? Jacob Soboroff with an eye-opening look at the cost of college and its toll,” co-host Savannah Guthrie teased late in the 7:00 a.m. ET half hour. Just minutes prior to the segment, fellow co-host Craig Melvin repeated the melodramatic sentiment: “Tuition or food? How the rising cost of college is actually forcing some students to make hard choices. And what, if anything, can be done about it?”

Right! I hadn’t thought about it like that. I knew nobody was—or could—do it for me. So I had to do it for myself.

Here's an idea, why don't these poor hungry and homeless college student put their asses to work just like people did when I was younger and going to college. One of the worst things in the history of America was the student loan bullshit. Hell I bet if these poor students actually spent their loan money on what it was intended for instead of boozing, partying and buying crap that has nothing to do with education.

In the early to mid seventies I worked with at least twenty young people that were working five days a week and paying their own way through college a somehow they all managed to succeed becoming teachers, lawyers and other professionals while working and not running up backbreaking debt.

I didn’t eat bologna, Mac and cheese, chef boyardee, penury butter and jelly for 10 years after college. Because that’s what it took to get out debt free, on budget and on time. One semester I even sold my textbooks back before finals in order to eat (drink, smoke, party and eat ... but it sounds better to say eat) . Welcome to the life of a student. Pennies matter to poor students.

Let’s see. . .lefty college administrators and communist instructors had their salaries skyrocketed causing skyrocketing tuition rates and this is ignored and all this wailing and gnashing of teeth over college debt completely ignores the true reason why college costs so much. So blame is pointed everywhere but at the colleges and we hear all this wailing about how we, taxpayers, need to forgive college debt for their out of control socialism/communist policies and bloated costs.

I’m shocked that homelessness has suddenly reappeared in 2 years after Obama solved the problem 8 years ago.

I started intently following the news when I was a young teenager. I noticed that there seemed to be rampant homelessness when Nixon and Ford were President then it dropped of the radar when Carter took office. It then reappeared during the Reagan and Bush 1 administrations then disappeared again during Clinton.

The thing that amazed me the most was how the Press would only wait a handful of months before attacking Republican Presidents regarding the homeless, as if thousands of people instantly became such right after the Inaugurations.

LOL! Reminds me of a guy I used to work with who got some sage advice from his dad. “Son, just remember that nobody out there gives a crap about you. Everything is on you.”

After I paid tuition and bills one semester, i had 85 cents left. Parents brought food. Too many ways to get food in this country.

Loved your “penury” butter.

MacDonald’s needs to raise minimum wage to $45/Hr. and give these college kids hours that fit with their schedules....

How the rising cost of college is actually forcing some students to make hard choices.

Well, DUH! LIFE is about learning to make hard choices!
Success is defined as the ability to learn to make hard choices which lead to the best outcome.

When I was in college I cut grass in the summer.

I had a friend who landed a grounds maintenance contract with a large developer. I made 2 1/2 times the minimum wage, got plenty of exercise and fresh air, and by the weekend was too exhausted to go out and get into trouble.

It was a great experience. The news is filled with stories of landscaping and lawn companies which are shutting down because Trump won’t approve enough H2B visas.

Maybe some of you starving students can go out and get these jobs. After all, if it’s good enough for Jose from Guadalajara...

I did the same thing. Had a hubby and a kid. Went to school during the day and worked full time as a bartender at night. Hubby was a firefighter so was gone a lot on fires or just at work. Was almost like being single at times.

But there’s a corollary. People do want to help others, and they will if they think they can. If they feel overwhelmed, they tend to throw up their hands, but if they think they can help, there are those who will.
