Why Does Coffee Make Us Poop? Scientists Gave Coffee to Rats to Find Out
Gizmodo ^ | May 19, 2019 | Ed Cara

A good chunk of regular coffee drinkers know that coffee isn’t just great at getting them awake in the morning—it also makes them get up and go poop. But while coffee’s laxative powers are well-known, it’s not clear why exactly this happens. To get to the bottom of this mystery, some scientists decided to do exactly what you’d expect scientists to: They gave lab rats some coffee.

Their preliminary results, presented this weekend at a research conference aptly named Digestive Disease Week, seem to reaffirm a suspicion that coffee’s poop-making prowess has nothing to do with caffeine. Coffee might also kill off bacteria found in our guts.

Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston fed their rats a tiny cup of joe for three days straight, with different groups getting both caffeinated and decaf coffee. Then, the researchers checked the downstairs plumbing of the rats with a physical examination and probe, focusing on the muscles that contract and help guide food (and eventually waste) through the gut. Lastly, they also studied how muscle tissues from the gut directly reacted to coffee in the lab. Their results were clear: muscles in the small and large intestine were more able to contract post-coffee, meaning things could move faster along the gut.

[snip]

This study isn’t the first to suggest that the gut’s muscles are directly affected by coffee. As far as back as 1990, researchers found that healthy people who self-reported as coffee-poopers had more movement of their colon muscles after drinking black coffee than did those who said they never felt the urge.

i knew this decades ago from when i used to drink about 6 cups a day. it’s obvious how it aggitates the system leading it elimination.

I can’t believe the things they waste money on to study instead of simply asking people questions or trying it themselves.

He will be known as an old sphincter when he can’t voluntarily hold his sh*t together. Having a gay time too often makes loose like a goose.

i disagree. though now i just drink water and things work out fine early in the morning a cup of coffee used to be more abrupt to my system in morning. i don’t think it’s just a water in issue as i mentioned in my other comment coffee aggitates the system - at least in my own “study” decades ago.

There you are, sitting at the rat diner having a cup of coffee and a jelly donut, talking with your rat buddies about the game, and some guy in a white coat grabs you and starts pressing on your stomach. No wonder they pooped.

We seem to be getting a lot of scientific questions to answer tonight.

Why don’t rats freeze on Pluto? Why does drinking an ocean make you poop?

Scientific stuff like that.

I was in the 7th grade science fair, so I have some expertise in these areas.

The answers are:

1. Generating electricity from Potatoes.
2. A model of a volcano.

All science comes from these two things.

It’s the warm liquid that does it. They should’ve also tried plain warm water

Have you ever had a colonoscopy? In preparation at home, you have to drink a big bowl of water that has some stuff stirred it. The stuff keeps the water from being absorbed as it passes through, allowing it to give you a good washing out.
It’s bizarre.

Alrighty, then. Except that it has NEVER had a laxative effect upon me, even in my worst of health.

It’s something else. And atypical laxatives DO have an effect upon me.

Never had a cup of coffee in my 60++++ years.

That's pretty impressive. Are there some religious reasons for that?

We have all this grant money so what do we do with it? Study coffee and rat poop.

There was a breathless report this evening on the local news about medical cyber security and the doctor researching it was just all crushed because his $219,000,000 in funding had been cut by mean old Trump by $60,000,000. Toughsky shitsky.

Medical cyber security is hardly the biggest concern I have about medicine. Being able to see a decent doctor without having to deal with droves of stinking illegals and who speaks good engrish and being able to pay for it are my biggest worries.
