When Perry Shoemaker crossed the finish line of the Eugene Marathon in 2:43:33, qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, it was the realization of a dream she had pondered as a possibility since 2015.
She had kept the goal quiet, sharing it only with those closest to her. Shes a runner, a mom, and a preschool teacher, and, well, shes realistic. Sometimes things go according to plan. Other times they dont, and thats okay, too.
Plus, shes 48 years old, and she didnt know how many chances she had left. For her to run the sub-2:45 she needed? Everything would have to be perfect on race day: the weather, the course, and her training. Shed have to hit the workouts she needed and stay healthy doing it.
My previous PR for marathon was 2:51:48 at Marine Corps, Shoemaker told Runners World. That was quite a drop I had to make. All of my stats pointed to the fact that I could do this. It was a matter of having the right temperature, the right course, the right day, the right training, and no injuries.
She can be forgiven for doubting it would all come together on one day.
There were, however, four people who werent skeptical at all: Shoemakers husband, Jon, and their three daughters, Abigail, 20, Rachel, 18, and Amelia, 11. They knew she could do it. They had complete faith.

“Shes a runner, a mom, and a preschool teacher...”
And a 24 karat whack job.
Congrats, seriously. But...is this healthy..?
Why is she a 24 karat whack job. She sounds like she has some goals, her family supports her efforts. All sounds good to me!
At 40 Mrs. Slim won the Mount Taylor Quadrathalon. 43 total miles. Bike first, then run, then cross country ski, then snowshoe, and back down in reverse order. A 5000 foot elevation gain to 11,300 feet.
She also ran many marathons.
This was before we married, and she discovered the joys of sloth, wine and bbq.
Sure it sounds good, but look at the picture. She looks like a candidate for a casting call for a movie about Auschwitz.
Don’t worry three trans-— will get to the finish line in front of her.
Good for her. She accomplished her goals.
That’s probably a positive influence for her kids.
Sometimes, you can return to a favorite activity after a long fast.
Does she wear a jockstrap? That’s all I need to know.
weighing 50 pounds ain’t much of a way to make a living
Maybe that is why I thought of actress Angelina Jolie when I saw the runner. Both dolled up, but somewhat emaciated.
I don’t know too many long distance runners with lots of fat.
She does look too thin but don’t most marathon runners look thin?
Yeah but this one is WORSE than i’ve even ever saw Angelina look!
She looks near death!!
Ain’t no one gonna look at that picture and say she’s ok.
Maybe at 48 she has to be THAT THIN to keep the dream alive.
NO MATTER what I did exercise-wise or what pills I took (legal or illegal) I could NEVER box like I dig at 51 like when I was 20.
But then at 20 I never could have imagined eating 3 dozen mussels at once so you take the good with the bad :)
Some things ya just gotta accept :)
All marathoners are thin, like one of my sons,a daughter, and granddaughter.
I’ve never eaten mussels.
I don’t suppose you put ketchup on it, do you?//
“death camp chic”
LOL
uh uh :)
a clear garlic sauce is good :)
Will be sad when some dude crushes her
