This months announcement from Party City that its closing more than 40 stores as it grapples with new challenges, including diminishing helium supplies, likely came as unwelcome news to customers who count on the store for their balloon and event planning needs.
But for scientists like Mark Elsesser, the announcement was something of a relief, inflating hopes that the public, and the government, might start paying closer attention.
When it comes to helium, were at a tipping point, said Elsesser, who is the associate director of government affairs at the American Physical Society, a nonprofit association of physicists. Party City has made our job a little bit easier when it comes to getting helium on peoples radar. Helium is something we need to address.
Elsesser said news coverage related to Party City's difficulties in sourcing helium cast a long-overdue spotlight on an element thats often overlooked and underestimated.
Yes, helium is known for making you sound like a chipmunk and filling your balloons. But the lighter-than-air element has far weightier uses.

Not this sh@# again? As long as parents can keep paying for balloons for their kids, there is no shortage.
And land on the north or south pole!
Excellent!
Would be using dog sleds or snowmobiles?
Er, no.
Not engineer possible.
So there is no way we humans can produce helium from hydrogen?
Gas chromatography and mass spectrometers use Helium as a carrier gas.
No Helium...No analytical results.
And Spags is next to Lizer. /WAAF
If I recall my college Organic Analysis classes, we used argon as the inert carrier for GC and mass spec.
It makes one talk funny, too.
Certainly.
Fusion nuclear reactions.
H bombs make an ounce or so with every city blown up. But that is is open air, so it too goes up and diffuses intI space. If fusion reactors ever work, we will get pounds per week per reactor.
Party City could always switch to hydrogen. Kids’ parties would be way more interesting.
Helium has been one of the primary shielding gases used in welding. Lots of fabrication now done with argon instead because of the ongoing helium shortage.
When aren’t scientists concerned about their made up crap? The only thing that really scares them is government getting smart and cutting off their funds for their made up crap!

.... Unlike its dirigible ancestors, the Aeroscraft is not lighter than air. Its 14 million cubic feet of helium hoist only two thirds of the crafts weight. The rigid and surprisingly aerodynamic bodydriven by huge rearward propellersgenerates enough additional lift to keep the behemoth and its 400-ton payload aloft while cruising. During takeoff and landing, six turbofan jet engines push the ship up or ease its descent.
This two-football-fields-long concept airship is the brainchild of Igor Pasternak, whose privately-funded California firm, Worldwide Aeros Corporation, is in the early stages of developing a prototype and expects to have one completed by 2010. Pasternak says several cruise ship companies have expressed interest in the project, and for good reason: The craft would have a range of several thousand miles and, with an estimated top speed of 174 mph, could traverse the continental U.S. in about 18 hours. During the flight, passengers would peer at national landmarks just 8,000 feet below or, if they werent captivated by the view, the cavernous interior would easily accommodate such amenities as luxury staterooms, restaurants, even a casino.
To minimize noise, the aft-mounted propellers will be electric, powered by a renewable source such as hydrogen fuel cells...
Maybe that’s why Hillary’s aide who runs Blackivy invested there...
Helium and Biden’s [maybe McCain’s?] buddy Igor Pasternak Worldwide Aeros blimp bump... does Ukraine have big helium reserves?
Maybe these reports are intended to manipulate the prices whenever this stuff is auctioned
