Not just Party City: Why helium shortages worry scientists and researchers
NBC News ^ | May 18, 2019 | Mary Pflum

This month’s announcement from Party City that it’s closing more than 40 stores as it grapples with new challenges, including diminishing helium supplies, likely came as unwelcome news to customers who count on the store for their balloon and event planning needs.

But for scientists like Mark Elsesser, the announcement was something of a relief, inflating hopes that the public, and the government, might start paying closer attention.

“When it comes to helium, we’re at a tipping point,” said Elsesser, who is the associate director of government affairs at the American Physical Society, a nonprofit association of physicists. “Party City has made our job a little bit easier when it comes to getting helium on people’s radar. Helium is something we need to address.”

Elsesser said news coverage related to Party City's difficulties in sourcing helium cast a long-overdue spotlight on an element that’s often overlooked and underestimated.

Yes, helium is known for making you sound like a chipmunk and filling your balloons. But the lighter-than-air element has far weightier uses.

Not this sh@# again? As long as parents can keep paying for balloons for their kids, there is no shortage.

And land on the north or south pole!

Excellent!

Would be using dog sleds or snowmobiles?

So there is no way we humans can produce helium from hydrogen?

Gas chromatography and mass spectrometers use Helium as a carrier gas.
No Helium...No analytical results.

I suspect there's plenty of helium available in the world for those uses.

If I recall my college Organic Analysis classes, we used argon as the inert carrier for GC and mass spec.

Certainly.

Fusion nuclear reactions.

H bombs make an ounce or so with every city blown up. But that is is open air, so it too goes up and diffuses intI space. If fusion reactors ever work, we will get pounds per week per reactor.

I thought as much. I'm not a chemist or a scientist but I know we can synthesize just about any chemical compound. I am a (very) amateur backyard astronomer. Just a little while ago I was observing the Moon. Focusing on the crater Tycho. Amazing. 51 miles across , over 15,000 feet deep and the youngest crater on the Moon. Nice view until the guy next door put his big back porch light on.

Party City could always switch to hydrogen. Kids’ parties would be way more interesting.

Helium has been one of the primary shielding gases used in welding. Lots of fabrication now done with argon instead because of the ongoing helium shortage.

When aren’t scientists concerned about their made up crap? The only thing that really scares them is government getting smart and cutting off their funds for their made up crap!

The CEO, Ukrainian Pasternak...is a Biden donor/bundler:

.... Unlike its dirigible ancestors, the Aeroscraft is not lighter than air. Its 14 million cubic feet of helium hoist only two thirds of the craft’s weight. The rigid and surprisingly aerodynamic body—driven by huge rearward propellers—generates enough additional lift to keep the behemoth and its 400-ton payload aloft while cruising. During takeoff and landing, six turbofan jet engines push the ship up or ease its descent.
This two-football-fields-long concept airship is the brainchild of Igor Pasternak, whose privately-funded California firm, Worldwide Aeros Corporation, is in the early stages of developing a prototype and expects to have one completed by 2010. Pasternak says several cruise ship companies have expressed interest in the project, and for good reason: The craft would have a range of several thousand miles and, with an estimated top speed of 174 mph, could traverse the continental U.S. in about 18 hours. During the flight, passengers would peer at national landmarks just 8,000 feet below or, if they weren’t captivated by the view, the cavernous interior would easily accommodate such amenities as luxury staterooms, restaurants, even a casino.
To minimize noise, the aft-mounted propellers will be electric, powered by a renewable source such as hydrogen fuel cells...
