FULL TITLE: 'Shame on you!' Outraged Kentucky Derby fans BLAST race stewards after Maximum Security is disqualified - but one lucky bettor wins a whopping $133,000 after putting money on outsider winner Country House
The 2019 Kentucky Derby was plagued with drama on Saturday, after first-place finisher Maximum Security was sensationally disqualified and Country House declared the winner.
Many viewers watching at home were outraged by the result, taking to social media to blast the stewards who made the controversial call.
'Fixed! I'll never watch this again! Shame on you!' one fan declared in a post on Twitter.
'Shameful! It was clear who won! #MaximumSecurity', added another.
While thousands were left shocked by the disqualification, it was very welcome news for one bettor who put money on Country House, an underdog with odds of 65-1.
According to sports analyst Darren Rovell, the person placed $2,500 on Country House before winning a whopping $133,000 in return.
Meanwhile, Rovell revealed that another bettor lost $8,000 after putting their money on Maximum Security.
Fans were forced to wait for 20 long minutes to find out who would take home the title, after Maximum Security was reported for veering out of line and impeding upon other horses.
As the stewards re-watched footage of the race in order to decide on a victor, many took to social media to poke fun of the situation.

I watched it. Jockeying for position in heavy mud is not a interference, it’s a horse race.
I fear there will be deaths when bookies refuse to pay up 65-1 on an obvious blatant cheating and DQ Of the winner for the first time since it all began in 1875.

NFL officials failure to all interference results in outrage. Horse racing officials call interfenece, results in outrage.
Our family raced horses back in the ‘80’s. These are judgment calls. A no call would have been a better outcome for the race, and the other horse owners probably wouldn’t have complained much or appealed.
But, that’s horse racing.

Except in a straight-away racing, every horse must maintain position as nearly as possible in the lane in which it starts. If a leading horse, or any other horse in a race, swerves or is ridden to either side so as to interfere with or intimidate or impede any other horse or jockey, or to cause same, it is a foul; if a jockey strikes another horse or jockey, it is a foul. If in the opinion of the stewards, a foul alters the finish of a race, any offending horses may be disqualified by the stewards."
Actually, what I hate is when once-a-year fans pretend that they are experts.
I've watched thousands of races in person (and live, not on a monitor). The only horse I bet in this year's Derby was War of Will to win. He lost. If he had lost by half a length or less, then MAYBE there should have been a DQ. But as it was, this was probably the worst call by Stewards that I have seen in my 50+ years of being a racing fan. (This year's Belmont Stakes will be the 54th CONSECUTIVE one I have attended, BTW.)
(A friend of mine, also with years of experience in the game, just compared the DQ to the removal of the Robert E. Lee statues.)

FTR, Maximum Security did not swerve. At most, he drifted. And he wasn't ridden to either side which implies a conscious action on the part of the jockey. This rule doesn't apply.

Tell it to the stewards. They were about a half step from having a pile up of horses and jockeys.

The question isn’t how many times in derby history it is how many times in all races is it called or is it always ignored. and ion the derby how many times has it been ignored.
You just don’t get the lead and then move laterally to block your competitors Why is that ok?

I have a couple of friends who have part ownership in some thoroughbreds and I inquired about their thoughts. The first one sent me this reply, “I lost a lot of money on the decision but I believe the stewards made the right call.”
I’ve played the ponies on a consistent basis for 40 years. The race replays clearly showed that the 7 horse fouled the 1 horse. If this had been a race involving $10,000 claiming maidens, no one would have batted an eye over the DQ. However, when you have millions of dollars on the line (the owners of the 7 horse were disqualified all the way out of the money and lost $1.8 million in purse money in addition to whatever they lost betting on the race), people’s perceptions on what is or is not a foul change.
Interestingly, I was betting on a quarter horse race at Delta Downs late Saturday night. I boxed the 4-9-10 in both the exacta and trifecta. The gates opened, and the 8 horse came out of the gate and immediately took a left turn and knocked the 7 into the 6, who was knocked into the 5, who then ran into the 2 and knocked the rider off the 2. The 8 then stormed down the track to cross the line first, with the 4, 9 and 10 running 2nd, 3rd and 4th. A steward’s inquiry was immediately posted, and within 2 minutes the 8 was disqualified and placed last, behind the horse who lost the rider. I won over $500 because of the DQ.
I have lost a lot of money over the years when stewards’ rulings have gone against me. That is just the nature of horse racing.
you seem to be more involved than the owner
There's always those that will claim that there were "too many winners" so the track had to fix the race. That's not how parimutuel wagering works.
