CDC: Stop washing your raw chicken

Don’t wash your raw chicken! Washing can spread germs from the chicken to other food or utensils in the kitchen. https://go.usa.gov/xmTqz

The agency recommended placing raw chicken in a disposable bag before placing it in the shopping cart or refrigerator, washing hands with soapy water after handling it, using a separate cutting board to handle it, and never placing cooked food or fresh produce on the same surface as uncooked chicken.

Place the entire chicken in the garbage when you get home from the store. After washing of course.

LOL!

But you put the chicken pre-wrapped package in a disposable bag. Then you put that assembly in yet another disposable bag. Just can’t be too careful with these Level 9 Chickens.

We always place meat products in one of those plastic bags in the stores. Some of those packages the meats are in leak. Especially unfrozen chicken. We always put it in another bag or else you could get slimed. But, we also wash it in the sink before we eat it. I wonder if these folks have ever heard of soap and hot water to clean your sinks and counters???

We all have “fresh” butcher areas. But they don’t hand it to you as is, they package it...same as they did for what’s “off the shelf”. Why is chicken special? What about pork (famous for salmonella if not cooked thoroughly), or the other meats?

I can understand taking extra precaution, but don’t know why chicken should be singled out. And frankly lettuce has been a bigger threat not being cooked.

They must think people are willy-nilly slinging the chicken and wash water around the whole kitchen.

Sure! I always hop on one toe while rotating around the room, shaking the wet chicken fiercely in order to distribute the blood-tinged water evenly around the room. And people accuse me of not knowing how to have fun...

Martha Stewart got salmonella poisoning and she raises her own critters.

My last Thanksgiving at the firehouse, one of the guys went to a place where you go out in a field where they have a bunch of turkeys and shoot it yourself... then the place cleans it and wraps it up. So he got this 40 pound turkey and he put it in the freezer. And another guy bought this huge turkey deep fryer and a bunch of oil. So on Thanksgiving the guy with the turkey brought it in, but he hadn't defrosted it.

This was a big station with about ten of us and all of our families. I was the senior officer but I wasn't paying any attention to the turkey preparations because it had all been delegated long before Thanksgiving. So they decided to just put the frozen Turkey in the oil and leave it in a “little longer” than usual. Of course being frozen it splattered spilled oil everywhere. Luckily they had it on a concrete patio or they probably would have burned the station down.

So when they took it out, it was the ugliest charred up mess that anyone had ever seen. But when they started to cut it up it was still frozen solid in the middle, so they hacked off the outside of it and put the frozen carcass back in the hot oil and made an even bigger mess. It was the worst turkey that anyone had ever tasted. Fortunately, no one got sick, but they made a huge mess and I have no idea how many gallons of oil they wasted.

We buy specially-made dog poop bags. They are really convenient -- far more convenient that using the old supermarket bags. It's only a matter of time before the econauts go after these disposable bags. How will they weigh dog poop on the sidewalk and in the playgrounds against a few bags in the dump? The ones shown below are "biodegradable and eco-friendly." As long as they don't decompose in my hand after picking up after Fido I'm ok with that.

“The agency recommended placing raw chicken in a disposable bag before placing it in the shopping cart or refrigerator.”

Ok, let me get this straight. I’m supposed to put it in a disposable paper or plastic bag BEFORE I place it in my shopping cart, when I’m buying chicken at my Piggly Wiggly?

Then, when I get home, and I’m about to cook it. I take it out of the disposable bag, and take it out of the plastic bag it’s wrapped in, BUT I DON’T WASH IT OFF, I JUST PLACE IT RIGHT IN THE SKILLET?

Yeah, you betcha...Will start doing that today. Thanks for the tip.

a simple water wash wasn’t going to make a worthwhile difference anyway

And that is exactly why a lye-based germicide is recommended.

And do not forget the PPE for washing dead chickens.

Arm length nitrile gloves, full rubber apron, face shield, hardhat, and safety glasses.

And if your pressure washer exceeds 14.7 psi(ABSOLUTE) additional PPE will be required.

I stopped following that part of any chicken recipe 20 years ago. Many recipes say to wash a chicken, say, before roasting it. You do then get molecules of raw chicken all over your sink area. Stupid. Just cook it.

But in general it is true that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.

Yep. But sometimes it does kill us. I had a friend killed at 15 fooling around with a motorcycle that he did not have permission to ride.

Does anybody still think that the purpose of the Democrat Party is to find and elect people who will get the most efficient and effective use out of every hard-earned tax dollar?

Anybody?
