FULL TITLE: Woman Gets Uber Driver Fired For Refusing To Take Her To Get An Abortion. Now She's Looking To Sue Him.

A 20-year-old college student in upstate New York reported an Uber driver for refusing to take her to get an abortion. According to the women’s account, which was reported on by Yahoo! Style (UK), the ride-sharing company canned the pro-lifer.

But now the woman is looking to take legal against the driver.

“I’m in college in upstate NY and I don’t have a car on campus because it’s expensive,” she wrote in a message posted to Reddit earlier this month.

“I’m 20 years old and I found out I was pregnant and subsequently decided I wanted an abortion because I’m in no position to care for a child,” the woman said.

She found a clinic about an hour from her university, because the nearby Planned Parenthood had a schedule that didn’t work for her. “Because I don’t have a car, I rely on Uber and [L]yft to get me places,” she said.

The student then recounted her interaction with the Uber driver, who attempted to dissuade the woman from choosing abortion before telling her he could not drive her to the clinic.

“My appointment was at 11:30am so at 9:58am my Uber arrived and he immediately seemed uncomfortable. After about five minutes in the car, he asked, ‘are we going to a planned parenthood?’ I said no (because we weren’t), but it set off alarm bells that he would even ask that,” she recounted. “The destination I put in was just the name of the doctor and the address of the clinic, there was nothing that would suggest it was an abortion clinic. After a few more minutes he asked, ‘are we going to an abortion clinic?’”

Maybe she could sue (1) her parents, since they are obviously making her to go college without providing her a car (2) the local Planned Parenthood for not working with her schedule (3) the college for not helping her schedule work so she could make the local appointment (4) the sexual partner for making her pregnant (5) must be someone else at fault.

The Uber driver would seem to be a ways down the list for fault, here.

In answer to your question in my experience at least half of Uber drivers are former cab drivers. (Source: am a cab driver)

He should have dropped her off at a theatre playing ‘Unplanned’.

So exactly how many of other irresponsible peoples kids are we to become responsible for?

These agencies wont even place them with people like us. We own firearms for self defense and more. We are devout Christians who will not teach them gay is ok.

You missed all the good stuff. The details.

The student then recounted her interaction with the Uber driver, who attempted to dissuade the woman from choosing abortion before telling her he could not drive her to the clinic.

According to her, He then said ‘you’re going to regret this decision for the rest of your life’ and that I was making a mistake.”

I’m sure I will be pilloried for this here

I’ve had a number of Girl employees over the decades

A couple of decades ago I had a woman worked for me...an older woman who had nobody really

Anyhow she had a very brief sexual affair I think with another of my employees who was married....I don’t think she had much sex

She got pregnant. Unbeknownst to me....though later I did recall she was always drinking tonic water

She was in her 40s and worked fairly close to me since I was owner boss

She decided to have an abortion and of course didn’t tell me with all my kids and my rather open disclosure to anyone who listens that I’m pro gun pro God pro South and anti abortion...viscerally

Anyhow she got a ride to the clinic....only one in Nashville....about four or five hours later in the evening she called me squalling that she was abandoned at such and such place and she was humiliated and the staff wouldn’t help her and so on.and she hates calling me of all people but she had no one else and so on....apparently she had no money with her...she was hysterical basically

She was left outside alone bleeding with her vagina packed with gauze and sobbing out of her head and it was cold .

Anyone can imagine I had to go get her and carry her to her house...my wife who is anti abortion too insisted that this superseded our beliefs

Hell I would have anyhow

She cried the whole time driving home and lamented her salvation and incredibly despondent and so forth

I gave her a week off

We never discussed it....though she wrote my wife about it thanking us

Btw she was a good honest worker who never stole from me

God throws us curves sometimes...

My wife and I once had a full blown AIDS patient with dementia show up on our doorstep..

The most socially right wing people he knew....but he also knew we’d take him in even if he knew we abhorred his lifestyle

That driver should have the right to refuse before the fact...carrying someone to an abortion

In dp0622’s world apparently you can’t oppose any crime unless you offer cradle to grave care for the possible victim.

I oppose spousal abuse. Must I provide all necessities to all women for their natural lives now, or be a hypocrite?

I oppose shoplifting. Must I know provide whatever a shoplifter wants so they don’t “have” to steal?

Utter nonsense.

Murder is never justified. No matter whether we have gigantic social programs (and we do) or NOT.

All the uber drivers I have encountered are normal looking, American looking.

The driver should have offered to take her home, but why should he be required to be an accessory to murder?

DP, I highly recommend that those FReepers who haven’t tried it volunteer for an hour slot in a prayerful witness outide a clinic.

Note, as not a ‘protester’, but as a witness. You would be peacefully witnessing to the dignity and humanity of the unborn child.

You could play a part in transforming someone’s life.

You would also find out why no-one can do it 24/7 :0)

Do Uber drivers have a legal right to refuse someone service? If this woman wanted him to drive her to do a drug deal could he refuse to take her? I would not knowingly drive someone to get an abortion were I working for Uber. Why couldn't she just get another driver or wait for a PP clinic closer to her to "fit her schedule"? I hope her lawsuit gets tossed out as it should be.

The driver has a better case against her for damages than she has against him.

"The driver then “hung around for about 10-15 minutes and asked once more if I wanted to go back with him,” she said, but noted that she “declined.”

That will take the steam out of her lawsuit! BTW, she can't force a doctor to give her an abortion either.

Think of the NYPD, f'rinstance. Or, do you think those girly men living in the lofts in the SoHo district would be willing to drive the trucks which supply their favorite bodega? Even I, in 2-1 or more Trump margin voting rural Pennsylvania has to deal with liberal @$$holes sometimes.

Most of the people you describe, are not conservative or republican. They vote democrat for the most part.

What I was talking about in my prior post, was those that could not stand to be around chitholes like NYC or most of NY. Those who are conservative or republican, cannot forever excuse their living in those chitholes.

Sounds like the boyfriend just wanted to make sure the deed got done.

One day, if she ever marries and has children, when she sees the ultrasound of her first baby, she’ll wonder why she didn’t listen to the Uber driver.

The article does not say he "kicked her out of the car," nor that he "took her out of their way to a remote location not on the direct route to the destination." You seem to be confabulating.

He stopped the car and told her that he couldn't take her to her destination. She had the choice of either getting out or being taken somewhere she didn't want to go. And according to the woman, “I told them everything on a call that was recorded, and the rep mentioned that it appeared the driver had taken a less direct route to get me to my destination prior to dropping me off.”

How about we HELP these kids once they’re born??

That's strange. I've heard pro abortion advocates use the same talking point.

At the point she called you were showing her compassion in her moment of regret and terror.

She is upset at him because she regrets the choices she made and is lashing out. I get uber no longer keeping him on as a driver but I feel he did the right thing here, he followed his conscience. He did not want to be a party to this act of killing.
