INTELLECTUAL ROCK: My Favorite Listening Music

Posted on 04/21/2019 6:36:15 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

My friends there is such a thing. It makes you want to listen closely to the lyrics. My examples would be Emerson, Lake, and Palmer "From the Beginning". Then there's Elton with "Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters." Yes-"I've Seen All Good People and Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley". It makes your ears work a bit but worth it. Funny how it's mostly 70's music.

Ah, ELP. So much talent, such incredible showmanship, yet they produced only 4 or 5 albums worthy of their skills. Still my favorite band, though.
All three members were in bands before ELP: “E” in The Nice, “L” in King Crimson, and “P” in Atomic Rooster & The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Those bands deserve mention in this post, too.

Good to see Genesis well-represented here.

The Knife is one of my favorite early Genesis songs. 70's people thought it was a protest song, but in fact the Old Carthusians (the boys from Charterhouse) were mocking the protesters.

I think of AOC if she were ever given power every time I hear the song now.

The best Genesis song that never made it onto an album...

I hear ya. A couple of months ago, my wife and I were moving stuff around in the garage, to store more stuff (argh) while our kitchen was being remodeled.

Pulled out the boxes of old albums, just to see if they could still be played. I was amazed at how well they had endured the years. I restored them accordingly, and am looking forward to replaying them once the study has been redone.

I still have the system I brought back from Germany, though I was given one of those 6 in 1 boxes for Christmas last year.

Funny how it's mostly 70's music.

Well, we were a more culturally homogeneous people back then. Americans still created music and art for Americans. We were unapologetically western, and celebrated our place in the grand human pantheon through art in all its forms.

In my view, the corrosive and degrading influences of the left have slowly eroded the foundational underpinnings of our culture, and it's reflected in the gradual debasement of the arts.

Saw Jon with Kitaro in ‘92 at Radio City. Didn’t think much of the colabaration. But Kitaro seemed to enjoy their time together.

Also saw Kitaro at Radio City do Kojiki in 90 and Mandala in 94...very special evenings.

The 70s were a time of incredible musical innovation and originality, pretty much everything done since the 70s has been derivative.

Thanks for the tip. Great track! I see Tony is having fun with the Hammond's power switch again.

I know they aren't rock, but Spyrogyra is one of my favorite all time music groups...one of the best concerts I ever attended, though my wife says it was the worst...lol.

Saw them in El Paso back in the mid-80s. The venue was changed, I had bought tickets in the first row of the balcony. Imagine my delight when we were put in the front row. I so enjoyed it, they put on a fantastic show.

Also saw Poco and Little River Band in the same venue. Poco opened for LRB. Talk about getting your money's worth! Poco is seriously underrated in the pantheon of rock.

Now that I think about it, Buffalo Springfield and Jefferson Airplane/Starship were intellectual bands as well.

As one who enjoyed a lot of jazz at that time, Spyrogyra was not my cup of tea. But The Pat Metheny Group was just amazing, the "White Album" is still one of my all-time favorite records.

IT is too bad that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice did not include the resurrection of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and did not write a great, triumphant song celebrating the Resurrection.

“Supper’s Ready” by Genesis.

Appropriate song for today:

There's an angel standing in the sun
And he's crying with a loud voice
"This is the supper of the mighty one"
Lord of Lords, King of Kings
Has returned to lead his children home
To take them to the new Jerusalem

Talking Heads.

I’ve heard David Byrne has a mild case of Aspergers... easy to believe when you hear their lyrics...
