Star Trek: DS9 Finally Gets the Documentary It Deserves
Popular Mechanics ^ | April 10, 2019 | Staff

Airing on January 3rd, 1993, the premiere episode, "Emissary," played out like a changing of the guard. Jean-Luc Picard and his crew, which had solidified Trek's glorious return to television with The Next Generation, boards the Enterprise at the episode's conclusion and disembarks for some new adventure—but the audience is left behind.

That's because it was time for something new, and that something was Deep Space Nine.

Now, some 26 years later, fans are returning to what's become a beloved show, sometimes even eclipsing the ones that had come before it, with What We've Left Behind, a crowdfunded documentary that explores the show, its past, its impact, and all the actors and creators that brought it to life. It's a project years in the making, and now we finally have a trailer.

That was a great scene, one of my favorite exchanges from the series was Warf saying he would kill Garrick at the first sign of trechary but promised to return the body intact, when sisko told him to make sure garrick made it back in one piece.

DS9 was the best Star Trek, but it was a rip-off of B5. a MUCH better series. JMS pitched the concept of B5 to Paramount. They turned him down but then integrated many of the ideas into their Star Trek franchise with DS9.

It had a chance at greatness, but just didn’t connect like DS9.

Later seasons just seem to be all over the place. Still love the show.

My favorite ds9 is in the pale moon light where sisko tricks the romulans into the war with the help of garrick.

Definitely my favorite too. Avery Brooks was very compelling. Not many actors could spend that much screen time talking to a room and make it work.

Truck stop 9. Totally went away from the whole premise of the Star Trek franchise. Never understood the popularity of a Star Trek-esque soap opera.

TNG: Families have NO PLACE in what is 88% of the the BATTLE CONDITIONS. Can you IMAGINE the PTSC of growing up on the TNG Enterprise. I think my favorite ST was Enterprise, with the exception of the horrible last episode. Archer was a Regular Guy, not a Superman like the rest.

Maybe you misunderstood me. B5 was, IMHO, far and away the better show. B5 was a trailblazer for many modern series with a long, overarching plotline going across episodes and seasons.

I also felt B5 only improved in seasons 2-4 as small hints and plot elements right back in the pilot have their significance revealed. I have watched the whole series from beginning to end at least 5 times and still catch new things. As far its ambitions go, only the MCU compares, abet with much bigger budgets and names.

Season 5 of B5 was a little weak because JMS had to rush the climax in season 4 when he wasn’t sure he would get a season 5. Still B5 season 5 wipes the floor with any season of DS9.

And DS9 at its weakest was some of the best Trek, which is to say that most Trek was dreadful. TOS had a few really outstanding episodes and still love WoK. I was excited with TNG when it first came out because I was young and dumb and thought Trek was cool, but stopped watching it with any regularity in the last few seasons as I became less dumb and enchanted with it. I have yet to watch any of the TNG movies. Don’t get me started on how bad Voyager or Enterprise were. I hear there is a new series out but I just can’t be bothered.

DS9 was by far the best of the newer Star Trek series’ with Enterprise next. Yes Voyager was easily the worst. Also yes, Babylon 5 was very good as a whole.

Spare me the space based utopia and the Leftist perfectibility of man crap. Not gonna happen. People will always care about money, looks, status, etc. I really loved the episode “In the Pale Moonlight” in which Sisko and Garak commit all sorts of crimes including murder to manipulate the Romulan Empire into coming into the Dominion War on their side. Of course anybody would do that. Spare me the morality play BS. It’s war and you have to get your hands dirty for the greater good.

Side note:

Where the hell is the good sci fi now.....not fantasy like Game of Thronesbut Sci Fi? The only series to come out in this millennium that compare to the 1990s are Star Trek Enterprise and Battlestar Galactica reimagined which was a million times better than the original 1970s series. Otherwise there’s nothing.

Big fan of B5 here!

Every so often I re-watch it ! A breakthrough series in many ways. I really felt it lost something when the Sinclair character was replaced by Sheridan. I know it was necessary because of O’Hare’s illness. I never Boxleitner ever fit well into the roll or maybe the Sheridan character always seemed like badly placed rivet that was necessary but in the way. Yes season 5 was weak!

Maybe I should start a thread about SciFi series that had promise but either the networks gave up to soon or the writing went flat. I can think of several.

Firefly. I would like to know the name of the idiot at Fox entertainment that canceled that show.

If the documentary doesn’t talk about how they ripped off JMS it’s worthless.

Not a huge fan of Next Generation or DS9 but there were some excellent episodes of both. I watched each and every episode because I was a HUGE STTOS fan (yes those are dated now).

I was a huge fan of TOS, and was really excited when TNG made its debut. I gave up on it during the 2nd season. I thought they had too many easy resolutions to their problems. A friend told me later that I had quit just before the show really got good. so, I went back and caught the show in reruns and decided it really became a great show for most of the rest of its run.

Never got into DS9. The same friend who got me back into TNG thought DS9 was superb, but I just never found it interesting. Maybe I should try streaming it sometime.

Expanse. Was on syfy for 3 years, they canceled it but Amazon picked it up. Really neat story, very well told.
